
Softball Shuts Out Delaware State, Elon

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Michigan State softball turned in complete game efforts on Friday, March 11, defeating Delaware State by a score of 16-0 in game one before shutting down Elon in a pitcher's duel, 1-0.
With a pair of wins on Friday, Michigan State improved to 14-10 on the season, already matching its win total from the 2021 season. The Spartans are 3-1 at the UNCG Spartan Classic with one more game against Delaware State yet to be played.
Michigan State's pitching staff combined to allow just two hits total across both games, throwing a pair of one-hitters. Freshmen duo Faith Guidry and Ashley Martin combined to shut out Delaware State in game one, striking out a pair of batters. Guidry improved her record to 2-2 with the win.
Sophomore Ashley Miller tossed her fourth complete game shutout of the season against Elon, punching out eight Phoenix batters and allowing one hit in seven innings. Miller, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, improved to 7-5 on the year and lowered her earned run average to .69.
As a team Michigan State possesses a 1.39 ERA and a .92 WHIP in 161 innings pitched.
MSU's 16-0 romp over Delaware State was highlighted by a 10-run fourth inning. The Spartans scored a trio of runs in each of the first and third innings. Nine Spartan batters collected hits in game one as the team hit .593 (16-for-27) overall and .714 (10-for-14) with runners in scoring position. A total of 16 batters recorded a plate appearance in the 10-run fourth.
Senior Jessica Mabrey, senior Mackenzie Meech, sophomore Alexis Barroso and senior Kendall Kates reached base in all their plate appearances against Delaware State. Mabrey led the team with four runs scored while Barroso collected a pair of career bests with three hits and five RBI. Junior Camryn Wincher matched her career bests with three hits and four RBI.
Fifth-year Caitie Ladd, freshman Kayleigh Roper and Kates each had a pair of hits in game one. Ladd drove in a season-high three RBI while Roper brought home a pair of runners. Sophomore's Marissa Trivelpiece and Zaquai Dumas also recorded hits.
Game two was a classic pitcher's duel as Miller and Elon's Taylor Cherry duked it out in the circle.
Michigan State was held scoreless through four innings before a fifth inning home run by Dumas broke the ice. Dumas' home run to left field was her second in as many days and came at an important moment for the Spartans. Wincher was a team-best 2-for-3 in game two with a double, while Barroso and Kates also recorded base knocks.
Michigan State's offense is now hitting .276 on the season with a .352 on-base percentage.
