Magness places sixth in women’s 5000m, Franklin and Stephenson become Second Team All-Americans in pole vault
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Morgan Beadlescomb earned himself a chance at two national titles in tomorrow's finals, while Jenna Magness took sixth in the women's 5000m to highlight three All-American finishes from Michigan State on Friday night at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships inside the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Â
Beadlescomb recorded the second-best preliminary time to advance to Saturday's finals for the men's mile, as that race will precede his run in the men's 3000m finals later on Saturday. For Magness, she picked up First Team All-American honors in the women's indoor 5000m for the second-straight year, while pole vaulters Trevor Stephenson and Sophia Franklin both earned Second Team All-American for the first time during indoor season.
Â
Stephenson started MSU's evening with the men's pole vault, as he was successful on his second jump at 5.35m but was unable to vault over the 5.45m bar on three tries, tying for 13th in the event and receiving his second NCAA All-American distinction after being a Second Team All-American at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Â
In the men's mile preliminaries, Beadlescomb took an early lead in Section 1 and used that pace to cruise to a second-place finish at 3:57.10 behind the top runner, the Big Ten champion Jonathan Davis of Illinois. The time earned Beadlescomb a qualifying spot in Saturday's men's mile finals, where he will be in the No. 8 lane.
Â
Franklin cleared the bar on her first try at 4.16m in the women's pole vault, but did not clear the 4.26m bar on three tries afterward, placing 12th in the competition. The finish earned Franklin her first All-American honor at the indoor national championships and her third overall All-American distinction after being an Outdoor All-American in 2018 and 2021.
Â
The night closed with Magness keeping pace with the leading group in the women's 5000m until the final few laps, as the Spartan crossed the finish line in sixth place at 15:37.43, just over seven seconds behind national champion Courtney Wayment of BYU (15:30.17). Magness is now a back-to-back First Team All-American in the indoor women's 5000m after placing seventh last season at the NCAAs, and is a three-time First Team All-American at the distance after placing fourth in the NCAA Outdoor 5000m race last spring.
"Overall, we were pleased with how it went," said Director of Track and Field Lisa Breznau. "Anytime you get a chance to come to a championship-level meet, you have a great opportunity to learn something and grow as a person. Whether it went as planned or didn't go as planned for our athletes, I know that we'll be better this coming outdoor season because of that."
Â
Franklin became the first Spartan in program history to earn All-American status in the indoor women's pole vault, while Stephenson is the first MSU men's pole vaulter to become an All-American since Tim Ehrhardt in 2017 and 2018. For Magness, she is the first Spartan woman in program history to receive Indoor All-American honors in two consecutive seasons.
Â
Michigan State will close out the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday, March 12 with Beadlescomb's two finals. The Spartan will race in the men's mile finals at 4 p.m CT (5 p.m. ET) and then quickly turn around for the men's 3000m finals at 5 p.m. CT (6 p.m. ET). Both races will be streamed on ESPN3.
