The Spartan also earns spot as Second Team All-American in the men’s 3000m
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Racing in a pair of finals on the second day of the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Michigan State distance runner Morgan Beadlescomb came within .05 seconds of a national title when he placed second in the men's mile and took home his first NCAA silver medal on Saturday evening at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Overcoming the news of his grandfather's stroke this past week, the sixth-year Spartan received First Team All-America distinction for his mile finish, while his 12th-place finish in the men's 3000m finals earned him Second Team All-America honors.
Beadlescomb stayed in the middle of the pack for most of the mile finals but made his way to towards the front in the final lap, and then used a burst in the final stretch to challenge Mario Garcia Romo of Ole Miss. The Spartan nearly caught the Rebel for the NCAA crown, finishing in second at 4:07.59 behind Garcia Romo's championship-winning time of 4:07.54.
The MSU runner then got an hour of rest before taking part in the 3000m finals, as Beadlescomb fought to keep up with the main bunch until the final 600 meters, eventually finishing 12th at a time of 8:04.87.
"Morgan is just an incredibly gifted athlete, and he has the skill set and talent to perform well at this level," said Director of Track and Field Lisa Breznau. "He has an amazing range. There's not that many men out there at the NCAA Championships that could run the 5000m, the 3000m or the mile and have a shot at winning each of those. He's that type of person and those people are really rare and special. I think the fact that he's part of our program - when you look at what he's done not only this year but in his entire body of work to get to this point - is certainly impressive and a testament to being a part of Michigan State, and of the mindset that it takes to be really good at our university. It lifts up our program, and it lifts up our athletic department and the university as well."
With his finishes on Saturday, Beadlescomb is now a four-time Indoor All-American after receiving First Team All-America honors in the men's 5000m during the 2020 and 2021 indoor campaigns. Overall, the Spartan stands as a nine-time All-American with three Cross Country All-America distinctions (2019-2021) and two Outdoor All-America honors (2019 and 2021 in men's 5000m).
Additionally, Beadlescomb is the first MSU men's runner to be an Indoor All-American in the mile since Shane Knoll was a First Team All-American in 2009, and the only the fourth male to do so in program history. For the indoor 3000m, his is the fifth male Spartan to achieve All-American status at that distance, with the last being Caleb Rhynard (Second Team) in 2014.
He is also the first MSU men's track and field athlete to earn two All-America honors at the same NCAA Indoor Championships since Antonio James in 2014. James was a First Team All-American in the weight throw and a Second Teamer in the shot put that year.
Michigan State opens the outdoor track and field season on March 24-26 at the Raleigh Relays.
