
Petruno Sets School Record in Men’s 1,500m on First Day of the Raleigh Relays

Franklin takes first in pole vault, while Perez places seventh in 10,000m
RALEIGH, N.C. – It was a record-breaking day for John Petruno on the first day of the 2022 outdoor season, as the Michigan State track and field program opened the Raleigh Relays on Thursday at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility.
MSU began the day with Valadian Pallett placing 28th in the women's shot put with a 13.18m throw, while the Spartans had a pair of athletes take part in the women's pole vault. Sophia Franklin continued her dominance from indoor season into the outdoor campaign, finishing in first place with a top vault of 4.15m, while teammate Calli Ostapowicz was tied for eighth at 3.70m.
The men's 1,500m saw four Spartans run, as Petruno placed third overall in the event after using a school-record and personal-record 3:40.43 time to take third in the 15th and final heat. Also competing were Brendan Favazza (3:51.55 in Section No. 9), Alexander Penski (3:52.69 in Section No. 5) and Jeremy Kloss (3:55.32 PR in the first section).
In the women's 10,000m, Makayla Perez used a late push to place seventh at a time of 33:36.86 in her first career 10,000m race while Lynsie Gram finished in 13th with a 33:51.14 time.
Petruno's mark broke Tim Simpson's previous school-record 3:41.06 time set back in 1987.
Michigan State continues competition at the Raleigh Relays on Friday, March 25, kicking off action at 9:30 a.m. with the women's discus and men's high jump.
