
Spartans Wrap up Spring Break Tournament with Win over Idaho

TEMPE, Ariz. - Michigan State men's tennis got back to its winning ways on Sunday with a victory over Idaho in the final day of the Arizona State Spring Break Tournament. The Spartans defeated the Vandals 4-2 this morning at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe.
"It was a great finish for the Spartans to close out spring break with a win over a tough Idaho team," head coach Gene Orlando commented. "Overall it's been a great week of training and a three hard-fought matches."
MSU fought back from a 1-0 deficit when the Vandals earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3. Jack Winkler and Nick Williams played in their third and final No. 1 doubles match of the tournament, falling 6-3 to Idaho's Bruno Casino and Francisco Bascon. At No. 3, Kazuki Matsuno and Jarreau Campbell battled it out with Francisco Gay and Mario Duron, the Vandals coming away with the 6-4 win. The unfinished match at No. 2 was tied 5-5 when the doubles point was one.
The Spartans secured the victory with wins at four of six singles courts, the match at No. 1 between Winkler and Gay going unfinished. Each match won by MSU was a victory earned in straight sets. Freshman Max Sheldon picked up his first career win at No. 2 singles, defeating Idaho's Bascon 6-2, 6-4. Sheldon improved to a 15-8 overall record in singles action. At No. 4, Luke Baylis took on Matteo Masala and came away with a 7-5, 6-3 win.
Despite a loss at No. 3, MSU wrapped up the match with wins at No. 5 and 6 singles. Carson Gates batled to extra points against Duron in the first set, winning 7-5 before quickly wapping up the match with a 6-1 win in the second set. At No. 6, Anthony Pero picked up a smooth win with a 6-1, 6-1 besting of Vivek Ramesh.
The Spartans return home this week for a doubleheader hosted at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center in East Lansing. Michigan State will face both Xavier and Niagara on Friday, March 18 beginning at noon.
