Omania One Win Away from Final X New York, Caffey Defeated in 92kg Freestyle Semifinals
CORALVILLE, Iowa – Michigan State wrestlers Cameron Caffey and Peyton Omania opened action on Saturday at the U.S. World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, being held at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa.
Â
Omania put himself one step closer to joining the U.S. Senior World Team for the second-straight season at the 67kg weight class in Greco-Roman wrestling, defeating Nathan Moore of the Northern Colorado Wrestling Club in the quarterfinals using a pin 48 seconds into the bout.
Â
Omania will now face former Olympian Alejandro Sancho in Sunday afternoon's 67kg Greco-Roman semifinals, a rematch from the 2021 U.S. World Team Trials last September. The winner of that match advances to Final X New York on June 8, facing the other semifinal winner of either Lenny Merkin or Alston Nutter. The winner of the best-of-3 series at Final X New York will earn a spot on Team USA for the 2022 World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade, Serbia this September.
Â
For Caffey, his chances of representing the United States in the freestyle 92kg weight class ended Saturday in the semifinals. Caffey opened the day by winning via a 5-3 decision over Campbell's Levi Hopkins in their quarterfinal showdown. In the semifinal round, Caffey met N.C. State's Isaac Trumble in a rematch of the U.S. Open finals three weeks ago, but Trumble came out victorious this time when he picked up an 11-0 victory by superiority over the Spartan.
Â
Caffey now heads to the consolation semifinals tomorrow morning in Coralville, fighting for a spot in the 92kg freestyle third-place match.
