East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State coach Adam Nightingale has announced the Spartan hockey captains for the 2022-23 season, on the eve of the team's opening exhibition game.
Graduate Transfer Miroslav Mucha (Bytča, Slovakia) has been named the captain of the squad, while fifth-year players Cole and Christian Krygier (Novi, Michigan) and junior Nash Nienhuis will serve as alternate captains.
I'm very confident and excited about our team leadership," said Nightingale. "All four embody what it means to be a student-athlete at Michigan State. Leadership is not easy – but these four are up to the challenge and will have our team's unwavering support."
Mucha, a graduate transfer from Lake Superior State, was an alternate captain for the Lakers as a senior and was a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. He brings 104 games of collegiate experience to the locker room, and had an 18-39-57 scoring line for the Lakers in his four seasons. A three-time WCHA Scholar-Athlete, Mucha is pursuing a second bachelor's degree in economic geography.
The Krygier twins are back for a fifth year of college hockey at Michigan State, both with more than 100 games under their belts as well. Christian is a graduate student with a 3-13-16 scoring line in 130 career contests, posting career bests (2g, 6a) as a senior. A two-time Steve Swistak Memorial Scholarship recipient, he earned his undergraduate degree in agribusiness management in May and is now pursing a graduate certificate in real estate development and construction.
Cole Krygier has logged 121 games on the Spartan blueline and owns 10 goals and 15 assists over four years. He also posted career bests in 2021-22 with a 4-7-11 scoring line and 51 blocked shots. He is a fifth-year senior finishing up his degree in agribusiness management.
Nienhuis is about to begin his third season in Green and White, and in his first two collegiate seasons was the team's Outstanding Rookie (2020-21) and Most Improved Player (2021-22). A Big Ten Distinguished Scholar a year ago with a GPA north of 3.7 for the 2021-22 campaign, Nienhuis more than tripled his freshman year points total with three goals and 11 assists, blocking 33 shots. He skated on MSU's top defensive pair with Dennis Cesana during his sophomore season.
The Spartans open the 2022-23 campaign on Saturday with an exhibition game against the US National Team Development Program (7 pm, Munn Ice Arena.).
