ALLENDALE, MICH. - Freshman Jessica Stieb's indoor shot put school record headlined what was a successful debut meet for several Michigan State Track and Field student-athletes at the GVSU Holiday Open Friday.Â
Â
"It was a good way to wrap up a fall that I'm really proud of," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said. "Our intention and sense of purpose is really high."Â
Stieb showcased her intention on the first try of her collegiate career, hurling a 16.60m and setting a school record which previously stood at 16.15m, set by Katelyn Daniels in 2018. The Loup City, Nebraska native wound up finishing second in the event.Â
Also having a standout performance from the throws squad was junior Elle Adrian, who topped the 20-pound weight throw event by nearly a whole meter with a 20.74m mark. Â
On the men's side, junior Josh DeVries and freshman Xavier Griffiths put up solid results in the weight throw and shot put respectively, in their season debuts. Â
"Hands down, our throws crew had a day," said Breznau. Â
Highlighting the sprint events for the Spartans, sophomore Lexy Wilson broke her 400m PR with a blitzing time of 56.38 to finish second, while freshman Liz Anderson joined her on the podium in her collegiate debut at 57 seconds flat. Â
For the men, senior Logan Allen was also just shy - six hundredths of a second to be exact, of his personal best with a 6.84 60m-dash. Â
In the jumps department, senior Tylor Leedom nearly equaled his personal best high jump mark with a 2.04m best attempt. Sophomore Natalie Blake also logged a strong showing in the pole vault at 3.90m. Â
After staying prepared during the prolonged winter school intermission, the Spartans will next take to competition at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday, Jan. 13. Â
