CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Michigan State softball was defeated by Illinois in its series finale on Sunday afternoon, 4-2, from Eichelberger Field.
Spartan Stats
Sophomore Faith Guidry (3-11) made her second start of the weekend on Sunday, pitching 5.0 innings in the circle. Guidry allowed four earned runs before junior Ashley Miller came on to pitch in relief. Miller pitched a scoreless inning allowing no hits and striking out one.
The Spartan offense scored two runs on six hits as five different MSU batters had base knocks. Freshman Mandy Esman led the team with a pair of hits, while senior Jessica Mabrey joined her with an RBI. Senior Brooke Snyder, sophomore Macy Lee, freshman Britain Beshears and senior Anna Fox also had hits for Michigan State. Snyder and Esman doubled while Lee tripled, as half of MSU's hits on the afternoon went for extra bases.
Fox and Beshears each stole a base for MSU, marking the first stolen base of Beshears' collegiate career.
How It Happened
Illinois got on the scoreboard first, using a two-run home run in the first inning to lead the Spartans early.
Lee's triple in the fourth inning got the Spartan offense going as she would be driven in by Esman's double to center in the ensuing at-bat, cutting the Illini lead in half.
Michigan State tied the game up at 2-2 in the fifth using a sac fly by Mabrey. Fox singled, stole steal and advanced to third on an error to set up Mabrey for the RBI opportunity.
Illinois took back the lead for good in the home half of the fifth with its second two-run home run of the afternoon.
Up Next
Michigan State will play its final home series of the season next weekend, hosting Purdue April 28-30 at Secchia Stadium. The Spartans will honor their senior class at Sunday's game.
