Softball to Honor Seniors Against Purdue

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State softball will honor its 2023 senior class this weekend when it hosts Purdue for the final home series of the season April 28-30. Seniors Brooke Snyder, Kendall Kates, Jessica Mabrey and Kennedy Wyllie will all be honor prior to Saturday's game against the Boilermakers.

Changes in the forecast could force the Spartans into playing a doubleheader on Saturday, stay tuned for that potential change as things progress.
ABOUT PURDUE
Purdue is 21-26 this season with a 4-13 record in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers are coming off of a 1-2 weekend against Ohio State last week as they took game one over the Buckeyes, 6-3. Michigan State needs a sweep this weekend to keep their hopes of the Big Ten Tournament alive.
Purdue seniors Mo Wimpee, Lex Pinarski, Alex Echazarreta and Anna Lochar will also be recognized by the Spartans prior to Saturday's game.
Michigan State is 26-29 all-time against the Purdue Boilermakers. The Spartans have either won or tied the series in each of the last two meetings between the programs. In 2022, Michigan State won the series in West Lafayette, 2-1. MSU shutout Purdue in each of the first two meetings of the series, 8-0 and 6-0, before dropping game three. Kendall Kates had a big weekend against Purdue last season hitting .500 (4-for-8) with a home run and a triple. Kates scored four runs in the series with three RBIs.
Purdue is hitting .245 (No. 214 in DI) as a team with a cumulative ERA of 4.16 (No. 209 in DI) this season. In B1G play Purdue has hit .183 along with a 5.60 ERA. The Boilermakers are currently No. 99 in the NCAA RPI.
The Boilermakers are led by the hitting prowess of Echazarreta and Tyrina Jones. Echazarreta leads the team with a .328 batting average and is closely followed by Jones' .321 average. Both are tied for the team-high with eight home runs each. Jones leads the team in RBIs with 31 to Echazarreta's 27, while Echazarreta has posted a .433 on-base percentage in 46 appearances.
Kiara Dillon has stolen 20 bases for Purdue to rank third in the Big Ten.
Echazarreta also leads the team in innings pitched from the circle with 93.0 on the season in 28 appearances and 11 starts. Wimpee has also made 11 starts at pitcher for the Boilermakers, posting a team-best 2.91 ERA over 55.1 innings. Madi Elish is second on the team in innings pitched at 78.2 along with a 3.29 ERA but has not pitched since April 15 against Michigan. Pinarski has thrown 50.2 innings over 21 appearance and nine starts with a 5.53 ERA. Opponents are batting .276 against Purdue this season.
SPARTANS TO HONOR SENIORS
Michigan State is set to honor the collegiate careers of Kendall Kates (101 appearances, 89 starts), Jessica Mabrey (92 appearances, 92 starts), Brooke Snyder (80 appearances, 15 starts) and Kennedy Wyllie (107 appearances, 69 starts) this upcoming weekend. The four combine for 380 appearances and 265 starts over their careers in the Green & White.
FRESHMEN ROLLING IN LAST 10
Over the last 10 games, freshmen Mandy Esman and Britain Beshears have been on a roll for the Spartans ranking 2nd and 3rd in batting average over that stretch of play. Esman and Beshears both played for Finesse Fastpitch and joined the Spartans having played with one another throughout high school.
In the last 10 contests Esman is hitting .300 for the Spartans, while Beshears is hitting .296. Beshears leads the team in on-base percentage over that stretch at .387. Esman's nine hits over the last 10 games is tied for the team high, as do her three doubles.
LOOKING FORWARD
Michigan State will conclude the regular season next week traveling to Bloomington, Ind. to face Indiana. The Hoosiers are currently 34-15 after sweeping Rutgers last weekend.
