Stewart-Barnett Wins Steeplechase Title, Jackson Shatters Shot Put Record on Day Two of Big Ten Outdoor Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the second-straight day, Michigan State track & field captured a Big Ten title and school record to headline a stellar day for the Spartans in Bloomington, Indiana, on the second day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships.Â
Sophomore Kate Stewart-Barnett won the women's 3000m steeplechase title while sophomore Opal Jackson set the shot put school record for the MSU women to follow up on a Big Ten title and school record for the Spartan men on Friday.Â
MULTISÂ
Senior Ryan Talbot earned runner-up honors in decathlon with a season-best score of 7,786, his best performance in the event since winning the Big Ten title in 2022. His point total also broke the facility record and is the ninth best score in the NCAA and fourth in the NCAA East Region, all but securing his spot at the NCAA Championships next month. Â
Talbot and sophomore Dylan Terryberry kicked off day two with the decathlon 110m hurdles. Talbot finished fifth in the field with a time of 14.85 for 865 points, while Terryberry set a personal best of 16.11 for 720 points.Â
Talbot put up the best discus mark in the field with a second-round mark of 46.93m, earning 807 points. Terryberry picked up 649 points with 38.89m toss.Â
In the decathlon pole vault, Talbot cleared 4.50m for 760 points and Terryberry cleared 3.80m for 562 points. In the second to last event of the day, Talbot set a nearly four-meter personal best in the javelin throw at 58.18m (58.18m), while Terryberry followed in a personal-best 57.69m for 703 points.Â
Talbot (4:43.46) and Terryberry (4:48.63) both set personal bests in the 1500m to wrap up the day. Terryberry finished the decathlon in ninth with 6,916 points, taking down his previous personal best of 6,574.Â
Junior Autumn Glover began the second day of the heptathlon with a huge personal best in the long jump, jumping 5.85m to finish third in the field and earning 804 points. Â
Glover moved to the javelin for the penultimate event, setting her second personal best of the day with a 30.43m throw and 485 points. In the final event of the day, Glover ran 2:27.67 to finish sixth in the 800m, scoring 722 points. Glover wrapped up the heptathlon with 4,907 points to finish ninth in her debut in the event.Â
JUMPSÂ
After setting the school record in the javelin on day one, senior Heath Baldwin returned to the field Saturday in the high jump to pick up five points for the Spartans and finish fourth. Baldwin cleared a season-best 2.14m, just shy of his personal best of 2.15m. Junior Tylor Leedom and freshman Brady Schultz both cleared 2.00m, finishing 13th and 16th, respectively.Â
Sophomore Jalen Nelson jumped 6.88m in the men's long jump to place 19th. On the women's side, senior Olivia Lopez finished 16th with a 5.74m jump in her final Big Ten Championship.Â
THROWSÂ
Jackson started her stellar day in the shot put by breaking the school record in the second round with a throw of 16.57m. The record stood only for a few minutes, as Jackson put up a 17.06m throw in the third round to become the first Spartan to surpass the 17-meter mark in program history. In the final round, she recorded a mark of 16.84m that also bettered the previous record of 16.40m Katelyn Daniels in 2017. Jackson finished seventh overall.Â
Freshman Colby Morlock, the lone Spartan entrant in the men's shot put, used a second-round throw of 17.69m to place 17th.Â
SPRINTS/HURDLESÂ
Sophomore Noah Sage ran a season-best 46.59 in the 400m prelims, turning in the third-fastest time of the day and securing a spot in Sunday's final. Freshman Alex Yon ran a season-best 48.86 in the event. In the women's 400m, graduate student Nala Barlow ran 56.31 and freshman Alexys Wilson ran a personal-best 56.82.Â
A trio of Spartan set personal bests in the men's 100m, led by senior Antonio Postell's 12th-place 10.48. Sophomore Logan Allen ran 10.70 and freshman Ian Thompson ran 10.91 for his first-career sub 10 in the event. Senior Amani Nuels ran 11.84 on the women's side.Â
In between high jump attempts, Baldwin competed in the 110m hurdles, running a personal best of 14.00, just one place and 0.01 out of qualifying from the final. Allen returned to the track for his second personal best of the day, clocking 14.57.Â
Junior Kaia Scheffler turned in her first sub-14 performance of the season in the 100m hurdles, running 13.94.Â
DISTANCEÂ
Stewart-Barnett claimed the first Big Ten title of her career Saturday night in the steeplechase with a time of 10:01.34, topping Michigan's Kayla Windemuller's second-place 10:02.48. Windemuller pulled away in the final lap before Stewart-Barnett used a strong final water jump and final 100m to outkick Windemuller for the win. Stewart-Barnett becomes the first Spartan to win a Big Ten women's steeplechase title since Katie Landwehr in 2016.Â
Three Spartans set personal bests in the men's 800m, led by junior Hunter Zartman in 1:51.50. Sophomores Gage Killewald (1:52.36) and Patrick Byrnes (1:55.54) also set personal bests, while senior Jalen Smith ran 1:55.21.Â
Junior Shae Harbaugh ran a personal best of 2:08.60 to finish 12th in the women's 800m. Sophomore Abbey Carvey ran 2:09.18 for 16th place.Â
