EAST LANSING, MICH. - Michigan State Athletics and PNC Bank are partnering to recognize the PNC Achievers Student-Athletes of the Month. Throughout the 2022-23 season, deserving Spartan student-athletes will be recognized for displaying well-rounded achievement through leadership in the classroom, in the community, and in competition.
The honorees for May were Matt Basgall (hockey) and Ashley Harlock (field hockey).
Basgall, a freshman defensemen from Lake Forest, Ill., is a kinesiology major. He played in all 38 games in his first season at MSU, ranking second among Spartan defensemen in points (17), tallying four goals and adding 13 assists. Basgall was the program's top-scoring freshman defender since 2015-16. He also led the team with 54 blocked shots. Basgall has been active in the community at local events such as the student-athlete food drive, accessible trick-or-treat and Operation Christmas Child.
"Matt had an outstanding freshman year," said Melissa Tallant, hockey's academic coordinator. "From the moment he stepped on campus, he was very focused on doing his best not only at the rink, but also in the classroom. I am looking forward to seeing what he can accomplish in the next three years at MSU."
Harlock, a junior midfielder from Livonia, Mich., is double majoring in neuroscience and human biology through MSU's Lyman Briggs College. This past season, she started all 18 games, ranking fourth on the team with eight points (goal and six assists). Harlock is a three-time member of the NFHCA Division I Scholar of Distinction and NFHCA National Academic Squads, and has been twice named an Academic All-Big Ten selection. She is the team's SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) representative, while also acting as the group's secretary. In the community, Harlock is involved in the student-athlete food and blood drives, Be the Match, the Green Bandana project, Teams for Toys and Operation Christmas Child.
"Ashley has done a phenomenal job of balancing hockey, academics, research, community outreach, and battling through the physical challenges that come with being a student-athlete," said Jeremy Flynn, the academic coordinator for Spartan field hockey. "She's has earned respect among her peers and administrators through her hard work and dedication to excellence. She has helped build a strong culture on her team which has produced all-time highs in the classroom recently and we are excited to have her serve as SAAC President next year!"
