
Spartans Set Career Highs Against Tulsa

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Several members of the Michigan State volleyball program set career-bests on Saturday in MSU's 3-1 (25-27, 25-10, 18-25, 19-25) loss to Tulsa at the 2023 Razorback Classic.
Junior Julia Bishop posted a career-high seven kills alongside the fourth double-double of her career on 41 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Jayhlin Swain also a set a career-high, this time with 18 digs to top her previous best mark of 12 set on Nov. 23, 2022, against Rutgers.
In just her second collegiate match, freshman Karolina Staniszewska registered her first career double-double with 16 kills and 16 digs.
"I thought we fought harder today, but we weren't in control," said Michigan State head coach Leah Johnson. "Everyone who plays us has something to gain because of the name on our jersey and the conference we play in. That's something we have to work through."
Staniszewska's 16 kills led the Spartans and was one off the match high, while freshman Taylah Holdem (14) and sophomore Nil Okur (12) also reached double-figures in kills. Okur had one of her best matches as a Spartans posting 12 kills on 18 attempts (.611) to go alongside her three blocks. Holdem led all players on Saturday with five service aces.
Sophomore Maradith O'Gorman led all Spartans with four blocks while fifth year Amani McArthur added three in the middle. Senior Nalani Iosia led all players with a match-high 20 digs.
Michigan State out-hit Tulsa, .191 to .171 and had 63 kills to Tulsa's 38. The Spartan were bitten by their aggressive serves however with 14 service errors despite eight aces. Tulsa out-blocked MSU 12 to 6 as each team had a nearly identical side-out percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
An early 8-0 run in set one gave MSU a 12-6 lead with Iosia behind the service line. Holdem's four kills over that stretch paced the Spartan offense. Tulsa responded with a 3-0 run of its own before Bishop scored on a dump over to thwart the momentum. With Michigan State leading 19-13, the Golden Hurricanes used a 10-3 run to briefly hold a late 23-22 lead. Kills by Staniszewska and Okur, along with an ace by Holdem put the Spartans on set point, 25-24, but three consecutive Tulsa points allowed the Golden Hurricanes to steal the first set.
Holdem started set two behind the service line and aided the Spartans to a 5-0 lead to open the set thanks to a trio of service aces. After two quick points from Tulsa, the Spartans proceeded to out-score the Golden Hurricanes 20-7 over the remainder of the set. Staniszewska had six kills to lead the Spartans offensively in set two, while Holdem added four to her final tally. Michigan State hit a match-best .615 in the set (18-2-26).
The two sides mostly scored back-and-forth throughout the third, with MSU trailing 17-16 just past the mid-way point of the set. Tulsa however would use a 9-2 run to amass a 23-16 advantage. A kill and a block by McArthur brought the Spartans back within five, but Tulsa finished their overall 11-4 run with a set three victory.
Extensive scoring runs of 7-1 and 6-1 by Tulsa were ultimately the decider in set four. Michigan State went on several scoring streaks of its own, but could not shake the Golden Hurricanes in the end.

The Spartans continue their trip throughout Arkansas with a match at Central Arkansas on Sunday, Aug. 27. MSU will take on the Sugar Bears at 6:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. CT in what will mark the first time Central Arkansas has hosted a Power 5 opponent in a standalone match. Through two matches this season, the Sugar Bears are 1-1, splitting matches against Illinois State (W, 3-0) and Colgate (L, 3-1).
