Spartans Pick Up Fall Play at the Fighting Irish Classic

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team plays its fourth event of the Fall season when the Spartans tee off at the Fighting Irish Classic, which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 6 and Monday, Oct. 7.
The 15-team filed will play 36 holes on Sunday and close with 18 holes on Monday, playing on Notre Dame's par-70, 7,023-yard Warren Golf Course.
The Spartans will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on the first hole, playing alongside host Notre Dame and Tennessee.

THE WARREN GOLF COURSE
The Warren Golf Course was constructed in 2000 and since its opening, the course has been named as one of the best courses in America by Golf Digest and has been featured in Links Magazine and Golf Digest as a must-play venue. In addition, Golfweek has tabbed the Warren Golf Course as one of the nation's top 15 on-campus collegiate layouts. The course hosted the 2019 U.S. Senior Open.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
The Spartans have captured the Fighting Irish Classic tournament title three times in the 16-year history of the event. MSU won the title in 2007, 2012 and then most recently in 2014. Individually, two Spartans have claimed medalist honors with Ryan Brehm winning in 2007 and Randy Hutchinson in 2008. Host Notre Dame has won the most Fighting Irish Classic titles, with four, while MSU is second with three tournament titles. MSU finished in 15th place last year.
THE FIELD
The field includes eight teams that finished last year in the nation's top-50, including new Big Ten members Washington and UCLA. The field also includes seven teams from the Big Ten, the most the Spartans have faced this year. The field: Duke, Little Rock, Rutgers, Kent State, UCLA, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Georgia Southern, Tennessee, Augusta, Purdue, Louisville, Notre Dame and Washington.
LAST TIME OUT
Michigan State posted its best round of the tournament in the final round on Monday and finished in 16th place at the Windon Memorial Classic, hosted by Northwestern and played at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill. The Spartans shot a 9-over par 293 in the final round to finish in 16th place at 51-over par 903 (307-303-293). Freshman Juan Velasquez was the top finisher for the Spartans, tying for 59th place at 13-over par 226 (76-77-73), closing with a 2-over par 73 in the third round.
LUBAHN'S THOUGHTS
"We had a rough go of the last time out and I think the guys are eager to get back out there and show what we can do. I've told them, there are always peaks and valleys in a season and right now, we have some things to figure out. This is a great event and we've had success here in the past so I'm eager to see how we respond."
