BOCA RATON, Fla. – Michigan State softball was narrowly defeated by No. 12/16-ranked Arkansas at the 2024 Paradise Classic on Saturday, falling 6-5 at Joan Joyce Field. The Spartans were also defeated in the team's second game of the afternoon, a 10-1 loss to Marshall.
Game One - #12/16 Arkansas 6, Michigan State 5
Senior Liv Grey (0-2) made her second start of the season against the Razorbacks, allowing four earned runs and striking out one in 2.1 innings. Grey was relieved by senior Ashlyn Roberts who was making her season debut. Roberts tossed 2.2 innings, striking out one and allowing a pair of earned runs. Freshmen Ava Mullen and Makayla Huddleston combined to pitch the sixth frame, getting out of a bases loaded jam to keep MSU within striking distance.
Michigan State posted nine hits, out-hitting Arkansas who finished the game with seven. Sophomore Hannah Hawley and senior Jenae Wash turned in multi-hit performances, with Hawley hitting her first career home run. Freshman Britain Beshears helped MSU close the gap on the Razorbacks with a three-run home run, her first in the season.
Senior Alexis Ross, sophomore Sydney Doloszycki, junior Macy Lee and senior Anna Fox also had hits. Lee and Fox each reached base twice with walks.
MSU struck first after a sac fly to right by Lee scored Ross from third. Ross and Doloszycki each singled in the opening half inning.
Arkansas was quick to tie things up with a solo home run in the second inning, however. The Razorbacks took a 4-1 lead following a three-run third, using a two-RBI single and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to their advantage.
Leading off the fourth, Hawley's first career home run put Michigan State back on the scoreboard in the fourth on a shot to left, but Arkansas would respond in the fifth with another long ball of their own to make it 6-2.
Beshears came through with a two-out, three-run homer to left in the top of the sixth to pull MSU back within one at 6-5.
Game Two – Marshall 10, Michigan State 1
Compounding errors spelled trouble for the Spartans in game two of the day as a seven-run second inning by Marshall would spell trouble for MSU. The Herd scored three additional runs in the third inning to open up a 10-0 advantage.
Junior Madison Taylor (0-1) started in the circle for Michigan State, allowing just two earned runs over 1.1 innings of work. Taylor was relieved by junior Faith Guidry who pitched 2.2 innings in the circle and allowed a pair of earned runs. Both pitchers earned one strikeout, with six of the game's errors coming unearned. Freshman Makayla Huddleston tossed one inning of relief, allowing no runs on no hits.
Sophomore Sydney Doloszycki recorded MSU's lone hit and RBI of the afternoon, and the Spartans drew a season-high four walks. Senior Collette Allen, senior Alexis Ross, sophomore Britain Beshears and senior AJ Militello all drew walks.
Freshman Jaeya Butler scored the lone run of the game for MSU after some confusion during the final at-bat in the fifth. A failure to report a re-entry by Marshall allowed Doloszycki another chance at the plate, scoring Butler on a grounder to third.
