Spartans clipped by Indiana State in 10-inning thriller in opener, before falling to Marshall in nightcap.
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Michigan State baseball was defeated twice in Saturday's opening day of action at the 2024 Snowbird Baseball Classic at a sunny and windy Centennial Park in Port Charlotte, Florida.
MSU was clipped by Indiana State, 7-6 in 10 innings, in game one, and was defeated by Marshall, 20-10 in the second game.
"It was a very disappointing day, we thought we let one slip away against a really, really good Indiana State team, and that was disappointing," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "And then we just allowed too many free runners in game two. I think we had 13 free base runners between nine walks and four hit batters, and when you allow that kind of traffic on the bases, your opponents is going to put up a big number normally and that's exactly what happened today. So, as bad as today was, we'll learn from it and be better tomorrow."
The Spartans did take advantage of the windy conditions blowing out at Centennial Park Friday afternoon by bashing four home runs on the day. Junior infielder Sam Busch and junior designated hitter Christian Williams hit round-trippers in the opener, while the senior duo of outfielder Jack Frank and infielder Dillon Kark knocked homers in the second contest.
MSU finished with seven hits in game one and eighth hits in the night cap. Busch finished game one going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Williams added two RBI and two runs scored, while Frank, sophomore infielder Jacob Anderson and sophomore outfielder Jake Dresselhouse added hits, with Dresselhouse knocking a double.
In game two, Frank, Busch, Kark, Dresselhouse all had one hit apiece, while junior designated hitter Jayden Terres along with the freshmen trio of infielder Ryan McKay, outfielder Landen Lozier and catcher Adam Broski registering hits. McKay joined Frank and Kark with extra base hits, smacking a double.
Lozier, Broski and Terres all notched their first hits of their Spartan careers, as Broski and Terres were making their career debuts for the Green & White. Freshman outfielder Jayden Holloway also made his career debut, reaching base twice on Marshall mishaps. On the mound, pitchers Jaxon Huffman and Hunter Long made their Spartan debuts.
In the opener, sophomore starter Joseph Dzierwa rang up seven strikeouts, scattering four hits, with three runs, one earns in 5.0 IP. Sophomore relievers Nolan Higgins (two Ks) and Tommy Szczepanski (1 K) and freshman Logan Pikur finished it off.
In the nightcap, graduate Aaron Mishoulam (one K) started, before relievers junior Noah Matheny (3 Ks), sophomore Aidan Arbaugh, junior Dominic Pianto, Huffman, sophomore Robert Klann, sophomore Gavin Sitarz (3 K) and Long (2 Ks) rounded out the rotation in the game.
The Snowbird Classic continues on Saturday, Feb. 24, when MSU meets Marshall again, at approximately 3:30 p.m., following the Marshall vs. Indiana State match-up.
