GENEVA, Ohio – Michigan State Men's and Women's Track and Field teams both placed 11th at the Big Ten Indoor Championships that took place between the Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24, while several student-athletes posted big performances.
"We had a lot of positive performances, a lot of steps in the right direction," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said. "We're constantly building and looking for growth so on day one and day two there was a lot of things that signaled we were in a positive space but we still have plenty of room to get better."
The men finished with 21 points and the women with 31 points. Winning the conference championships were Wisconsin on the men's side and Illinois out of the women's field.
After a solid all-around day out of the Spartans on day one of the meet at the SPIRE Academy Friday, multiple Spartans followed up on their preliminary performances by landing on the podium in their respective finals Saturday.
Highlighting the day was graduate student Heath Baldwin who rebroke his own day-old school record in the 60-meter hurdles, setting a new best mark at 7.81 seconds. The Kalamazoo, Mich. native and NCAA Championships probable heptathlete accounted for five of the Spartans points, also scoring in the high jump.
On Friday, the women's DMR team avenged their second-place finish at last season's championships with MSU's lone title of the weekend. Junior Kate Stewart-Barnett, senior Shae Harbaugh, senior Abbey Carvey and graduate student Lauren Freeland outpaced the conference competition with a time of 11:12.91 and earned First Team All-Big Ten.
