• Michigan State travels to Maryland on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 3:40 p.m. to open its 72nd season of Big Ten play. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network with Jason Ross Jr. (play-by-play), Anthony Herron (analyst) and Kylen Mills (sidelines) on the call.
• The Spartans began the Jonathan Smith era with a 16-10 win over Florida Atlantic last Friday in Spartan Stadium in the 2024 season opener. Maryland also won its first game with a 50-7 victory at home against UConn.
• Saturday's game marks the 15th meeting between Michigan State and Maryland. The Spartans lead the overall series, 10-4, including a 3-2 record in College Park. The Spartans are 6-3 against the Terrapins since Maryland joined the Big Ten in 2014, but have lost two in a row (2022, 2023).
• Michigan State recorded seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss and had two interceptions in the season-opening win over Florida Atlantic while holding the Owls to 248 total yards and 10 points. MSU's seven sacks tied for the second most by any team in the FBS in Week 1.
• Smith, who led Oregon State to new heights during his tenure over the past six seasons (2018-23), was named Michigan State University's 26th head football coach on Nov. 25, 2023. Named the 2022 Pac-12 Co-Coach of the Year, Smith built Oregon State into one of the top teams in the conference. He led the Beavers, who were ranked as high as 11th in the College Football Playoff rankings in 2023, to an 8-4 record in the regular season and their third straight bowl appearance, a first for the program since 2006-09. OSU went 25-13 in 2021-23 under Smith, including a No. 17 ranking in 2022 and a win over Florida in the Las Vegas Bowl. He also has experience coaching in the College Football Playoff as an offensive coordinator at Washington in 2016.
• Six of Smith's assistants at Oregon State joined him in East Lansing: secondary coach Blue Adams, assistant head coach/running backs coach/co-special teams coordinator Keith Bhonapha, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brian Lindgren, offensive line coach/run game coordinator Jim Michalczik, defensive line coach Legi Suiaunoa and tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator Brian Wozniak. Smith also hired Joe Rossi as the program's defensive coordinator/linebackers coach, Chad Wilt as the co-special teams coordinator/rush ends coach and Demetrice Martin as the cornerbacks coach, while wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins enters his fifth season as an assistant at MSU.

• The Terrapins opened the 2024 season by crushing UConn, 50-7, on Saturday in Maryland's home and season opener ... UMD's 50 points were its most against an FBS foe since 2017 when the Terps scored 51 in a win at Texas.
• Maryland's 43-point margin of victory was also the Terps' largest in a season-opener against an FBS foe since 1978, when Division I was divided into subdivisions.
• The Terps jumped out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, stretching their lead to 23-0 at halftime ... Maryland opened the second half with a score to lead 30-0, scoring on six of the first eight drives, before UConn got on the board, but then UMD scored 20 more points for the 50-7 final score.
• Maryland amassed 629 yards of total offense with 381 yards through the air and 248 yards on the ground.
• Redshirt junior quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. was 20-of-27 passing for 322 yards and two TDs, both to senior wide receiver Tai Felton, first on an 18-yard scoring play to open the scoring in the first quarter ... the second Edwards-to-Felton TD came in the third quarter on a 75-yard catch and run for a TD to open a 36-7 Terps' advantage ... Felton finished with seven catches for 178 yards.
• Redshirt sophomore QB Cameron Edge added 4-of-6 passing for 57 yards and one TD, while redshirt sophomore quarterback MJ Morris was 3-for-4 for 13 yards ... UMD QBs completed passes to 11 different receivers, including six with two or more receptions.
• Redshirt junior running back Roman Hemby led UMD with 66 yards rushing on 14 carries with one TD, while redshirt freshman running back Nolan Ray added six rushes for 60 yards and one TD.
• Defensively, UConn had 310 yards, with 222 passing and just 88 yards rushing, as the Terps held the Huskies to just 5-of-16 on third-down conversions.
• Redshirt senior defensive back Glendon Miller had six tackles and an interception, while redshirt sophomore defensive back Lavian Scruggs added five stops.
• Redshirt junior placekicker Jack Howes was 3-for-3 on field goals, with all three coming in the second quarter, splitting the uprights from 29, 33 and 23-yards out, adding 4-of-5 on PATs ... Howes also had four touchbacks on his six kickoffs.
• Redshirt sophomore punter Bryce McFerson had six punts for a 44.8 ypp average with a long of 64 yards, pinning five inside the 20, including a 56-yarder that was downed at the UConn 4-yard line.
• Terps' head coach Michael Locksley is in his sixth season as head coach at Maryland and his 16th overall at UMD, posting a 30-33 record at Maryland ... overall, Locksley is in his ninth season as a collegiate head coach, with three seasons at New Mexico, and has a 32-59 career record.

• Michigan State defeated Florida Atlantic, 16-10, in the 2024 season opener last Friday before a crowd of 70,271 at Spartan Stadium in the Spartan head coaching debut of Jonathan Smith.
• The Spartan defense recorded seven sacks, 10 tackles for loss and had two interceptions in the win. MSU also held FAU to 2-of-15 on third-down conversions and made three fourth-down stops.
• Fifth-year graduate senior defensive back Angelo Grose led the Spartans with a game-high 12 tackles; he also forced a fumble and returned an interception 15 yards. Seven different Spartans contributed on the sacks.
• Offensively, sixth-year graduate Kay'ron Lynch-Adams became the fourth consecutive transfer running back to rush for 100 yards in his Spartan debut, compiling 101 yards on just nine carries, including a 63-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
• Making his first career start, sophomore quarterback Aidan Chiles was 10-of-24 passing for 114 yards and two interceptions, while also rushing for an 11-yard score.
• The Spartans drove the ball into the red zone four times, but only converted once.

• After a Ryan Eckley punt that was downed at the 1, the Spartans took advantage on the next play as D'Quan Douse sacked FAU quarterback Cam Fancher in the end zone with 7:49 left in the first quarter.
• Following a Nikai Martinez interception he returned 41 yards to the FAU 18-yard line, the Spartans scored their first touchdown of the season at the 11:15 mark in the second quarter on Chiles' 11-yard scamper into the end zone to go up, 9-0.
• MSU extended its lead to 16-0 as Lynch-Adams busted loosed for a 63-yard touchdown, his first career TD as a Spartan and the second-longest of his career, with 9:07 left in the first half.
• The Owls got on the board with a 43-yard field goal by Morgan Suarez before halftime.
• FAU scored its only touchdown of the game on a fourth-and-1 at the end of the third quarter as Cam Fancher found Jayshon Platt in the end zone for a 10-yard TD pass.
• Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. The Owls turned the ball over on downs all three of their possessions in the final 15 minutes, including their last possession with just 1:23 left in the game.
• MSU ran out the clock to preserve the win, MSU's 24th consecutive over a nonconference opponent in a home opener.

Lynch-Adams is the fourth straight transfer running back to rush for 100+ yards in their Spartan debut, joining current teammate Nathan Carter in 2023, along with Jalen Berger in 2022 and Kenneth Walker III in 2021 … Lynch-Adams' 63-yard TD was the second longest of his career (66 yards vs. New Mexico State in 2022).

• Junior defensive back Nikai Martinez made his Spartan debut after transferring to MSU from UCF, and posted six tackles and an interception, also coming in the second quarter on the following series after Grose's INT ... Martinez returned the pick 41 yards, setting up MSU at the FAU 18-yard line and the Spartans punched it in from there for their first TD of the night ... the 41-yard return was 1-yard shy of Martinez's collegiate career long, as he had a 42-yard return at UCF in a game vs. Villanova in 2023, and overall, it was the fourth career INT for Martinez . . . his 94 interception return yards on three picks in 2023 ranked second most in the Big 12 and tied for 21st in the FBS.

• Senior defensive lineman Khris Bogle posted five tackles, including a collegiate career-high 2.5 tackles for loss, bettering his previous mark of 2.0 vs. Tennessee in 2019 during his time at Florida ... Bogle added a career-high 1.5 sacks, topping his prior career-best of 1.0 sack, done in eight previous games ... Bogle's five stops was one shy of his career-best of six tackles, done twice, most recently vs. Washington (9/17/22).

• Redshirt sophomore punter Ryan Eckley had six punts for a 49.5 yards per punt average with a long of 58-yards, along with pinning two inside the 10, highlighted by his first punt of the season, a 40-yard punt that was downed at the FAU 1 that set up MSU's safety on the Owls' second play of the ensuing series for the Spartans' first points of not just the game ... Eckley also had a 57-yarder in the fourth quarter that trickled into the end zone for a touchback after he also had a 47-yarder in the second quarter that was caught at the FAU 9 by the Owls' returner, along with his game-high 58-yarder in the third quarter.
