MSU had a pair of power play opportunities – the first at the media time out and the second with five minutes to play in the frame. The Spartans were buzzing in the offensive zone and put up eight shot attempts after the break, but PSU got two saves from Sergeev and a pair of blocked shots to keep MSU off the board. The final two minutes of the period saw MSU take a pair of penalties 21 seconds apart, making MSU kill off 1:13 of a five-on-three before the final horn sounded. MSU had a 13-8 edge in shots in the period, and Penn State blocked an additional nine Spartan attempts.
Second Period: MSU extinguished the carryover penalties, limiting the Nittany Lions to just two shots on net while skating up two men. Geary circled behind the net and passed out in front to Joey Larson, who buried it for a 2-1 MSU lead.
Third Period: Augustine was challenged with making a series of quality saves in the first half of the third period – three on a PSU flurry in the offensive zone, and he also turned away Aiden Fink's penalty shot attempt at 6:29 to preserve a 2-1 game. The home team was pressing for a goal in the final minutes – and Augustine kept turning away shots as Penn State moved to a 10-5 edge in shots on goal with five minutes remaining in the period. With under three minutes remaining in regulation and the Nittany Lions trailing by a goal, Geary was sent off for cross-checking, and PSU put Sergeev on the bench in favor of a 6x4 manpower advantage to try to gain an equalizer. That paid off with a tally by Ben Schoen, who tipped a shot from the high slot by Jimmy Dowd Jr. with 1:45 remaining in regulation to make it a 2-2 game.
Overtime: MSU started overtime down a man due to a late call in the third period, which gave them a brief 4-on-3 advantage to start the frame. Each team had three shots in the period, which were all stopped by their netminder. Both goalies were up tp the task in the shootout, stopping each of the first three shootout attempts they saw before Dylan Lugris finally put one on the board to take the extra Big Ten point.
