1/2/2025 10:42:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
East Lansing, Mich. – No. 1 Michigan State rallied from a 3-1 deficit with three goals in the final 26 minutes to earn a 4-3 victory over Wisconsin on Thursday night at Munn Ice Arena. Charlie Stramel had the game-winner for the Spartans with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.
MSU (16-2-1, 7-1-1 B1G) took a 1-0 lead early in the game on a Tiernan Shoudy goal, but saw their guests tie the game late in the first and score twice in the first six minutes of the second to take a 3-1 lead. MSU cut the deficit to 3-2 on a Karsen Dorwart goal with 5:34 remaining in the second, and then got the equalizer just 57 seconds into the final period by Isaac Howard. Both teams had chances in the third, but an exceptional play by Daniel Russell set up Howard and Stramel to put MSU back on top for good.
Luca Di Pasquo improved to 5-0 on the season and won his third game in six days. He tied his career best with 30 saves, while counterpart Tommy Scarfone made 32 for the visiting Badgers (9-11-1, 5-8-0 B1G). The Wisconsin goals came from Gavin Morrisey, Owen Lindmark, and Sawyer Scholl.
The Spartans outshot Wisconsin 36-33, and had 14 blocked shots to Wisconsin's 11. MSU was 0-for-2 on the power play, while Wisconsin was 1-for-3.
In the Big Ten standings, MSU moves within two points of first-place Minnesota, with 22 points in nine games.
The teams finish the four game season series when they face off at Wrigley Field on Saturday as part of the Frozen Confines event.

PERIOD RECAPS
First Period: Tiernan Shoudy gave MSU a lead at 5:36. The puck kicked out to David Gucciardi in the high slot, and he sent it back in on net. A scramble followed, and Tommi Männistö got a stick on it, hoping to get it past goalie Tommy Scarfone. The puck instead slid to the left side for Shoudy, and he deposited his fourth goal of the season. Wisconsin tied it with just under two minutes remaining in the period, when Gavin Morrisey was able to put back a rebound at the right post for the centerman's sixth of the year. Wisconsin outshot MSU 11-10 in the period.
Second Period: The Spartans took a penalty in the first minute of the second period, and the Badgers scored on the ensuing faceoff – Tyson Dyck had an open look from the left side, and Di Pasquo made the save – Kule Kukkonen tried to put back the rebound but hit the post, and Lindmark tucked it home at the right post. They took a 3-1 lead at 5:27, when Sawyer Scholl put back a rebound from the right side – a shot from the left circle by Ryan Botterill – for his second of the season. The Spartan offense was buzzing in the middle of the period, forcing Scarfone to make four big saves within one minute right before the TV time out. The Spartans continued to put on the offensive pressure, resulting in a Karsen Dorwart goal at 14:34. Dorwart carried the puck over the blue line and left it for Larson, who sent it down the wall for Red Savage. Savage tapped it to Dorwart, and he beat Scarfone glove side. MSU pressed over the balance of the period, but Scarfone stopped what came his way to preserve the one-goal lead. MSU had a 13-10 edge in shots in the frame.
Third Period: MSU took less than a minute to knot the game up at 3-3 after the intermission. Gucciardi stopped the puck along the left wall and got the puck to Stramel, who tapped it to Isaac Howard in the left circle – Howard ripped the one-timer for his 12th goal of the season. Shane Vansaghi hit the post as an MSU power play expired at the midpoint of the period, and MSU built a 10-5 edge in shots on goal by the 11-minute mark. MSU remained poised and composed and continued to push the pace and create opportunities – and at 14:55, the go-ahead goal went on the board. A great stretch pass by Nicklas Andrews on his own goal line went right onto the stick of Daniel Russell at the offensive blue line. Russell backhanded the puck to a crashing Howard, and it was he and Stramel with a two-on-one. Howard was patient and looked like he was going to shoot, but instead put it right on the tape of Stramel, who tapped it past Scarfone for MSU's first lead since the first period. The visitors were desperate to find an equalizer, but the Spartan was up to the task, getting three saves from Di Pasquo and blocked shots by Basgall and Shoudy to preserve the one-goal victory.

STATISTICS OF NOTE
- MSU overcame a 3-1 deficit for the second straight Big Ten game. The Spartans trailed 3-1 at Minnesota (Dec. 14) before ripping off three goals in three minutes in the third period and earning a 5-3 victory (with an empty netter). Charlie Stramel got the game-winner in both contests.
- MSU won its seventh straight home game after an opening-night loss to No. 2 Boston College. The Spartans are unbeaten in six straight games overall (5-0-1) since a 4-0 loss at Wisconsin on Dec. 6.
- The line of Stramel centering Isaac Howard and Daniel Russell had a five-point night, including the game-tying and game-winning goals. That trio has an 8-10-18 scoring line over the last six games.
- Stramel and Howard each had a goal and an assist. Howard's goal was his team-best 12th of the season; Stramel now has a 6-9-15 scoring line, well on his way to matching his 20 career points he had in two seasons at Wisconsin.
- Stramel assisted on Howard's game-winner in overtime at Wisconsin on Dec. 7, and scored it tonight on an assist from Howard.
- Wisconsin's first goal was the first 5x5 goal surrendered by Luca Di Pasquo this season. The two previous he allowed were power-play markers. Di Pasquo improved to 5-0 on the season by tying his career best of 30 saves, set vs. Canisius in October 2023.
- Over the last three games, Di Pasquo has stopped 75 of 79 shots.
- Tiernan Shoudy scored his second goal in as many games to give MSU the first-period lead. Tommi Männistö had assists on both of Shoudy's tallies.
- Karsen Dorwart scored his fifth of the season in the second period, off assists from Red Savage and Joey Larson.
- Isaac Howard tied the game at 3-3 with his goal less than a minute into the third period. He had eight goals as a sophomore, and now pushed his season scoring line to 12-12-24, tied for second in the Big Ten in goals and points (and sixth in assists).
- Senior blueliner David Gucciardi had assists on two goals – on Shoudy's opener and Howard's equalizer. It is his first multiple-point game of the season.
