NOTES TO KNOW:
• Michigan State hockey puts a spotlight on cancer awareness throughout the month of November with its annual 'Spartans Full Strength' initiative, in partnership with the Stephen Swistak Memorial Fund. MSU players and staff will wear purple ribbons throughout the month.
• Swistak played four seasons at Michigan State from 2000-04 before completing his medical degree from MSU's College of Human Medicine in 2008. He had just started his job at Detroit Medical Center before being diagnosed with recurrent esophageal cancer, passing away in June 2015.
• Michigan State is ranked No. 1 in the USCHO.com poll and No. 1 in the USA Hockey poll for the fourth consecutive week. It's the first week this season that MSU has garnered every first place vote in both polls. Last season the Spartans spent nine weeks as the consensus top team in the country.
• Michigan State is coming off a 2-0-0 weekend against then No. 3-ranked Penn State winning games by scores of 2-1 (OT) and 5-0. The Spartans were a perfect 9-for-9 on the penalty kill against the Nittany Lions.Â
• Over its last five games, Michigan State is 26-for-27 on the penalty kill. The Spartans were 9/9 against PSU, 13/14 against Northern Michigan and 4/4 in game two of their series against Boston University.
• Senior Charlie Stramel led the Spartans in points (2g-2a-4p) against PSU last weekend tallying all four points in game two. Senior Daniel Russell had a team-leading three assists in the second game of the series. Freshman Anthony Romani scored one goal on both nights.
• Junior goaltender Trey Augustine was named the Big Ten First Star of the Week for his performance against the Nittany Lions. Augustine held the Nittany Lions to just one goal over the weekend, stopping 60-of-61 shots he faced against the nation's sixth-best scoring offense. Augustine's 0.49 goals against average and .984 save percentage over the weekend led all goaltenders in the NCAA. He posted a season-best 36 saves in game to earn his ninth career shutout.
• Stramel was named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week after turning in a career-best four-point effort on Saturday, scoring the eventual game-winning goal 2:32 into the opening period. Stramel won .648 percent of his faceoffs in the series, finishing the weekend with a +4 rating.
• It is the third First Star honor of Augustine's career and sixth B1G weekly honor overall, while Stramel earns his fourth weekly accolade.
• Michigan State ranks #3 nationally in scoring defense (1.50), #8 in scoring offense (3.75) and #3 in scoring margin (+2.25).
