SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Freshman Porter Martone posted his first career multi-goal game on Friday night as the Spartans took down Notre Dame, 4-1, from the Compton Family Ice Arena.
"I liked us in the first, we played to our identity," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "In the second they (Notre Dame) pushed and scored on the power play, and it was a tight game going into the third. I thought we showed some poise and Trey (Augustine) made some saves for us. That's a good team and we have to be ready for tomorrow."
Michigan State improves to 8-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in conference action while claiming all three points towards the B1G standings. The Irish drop to 3-7-1 (0-5-0 B1G) ahead of Saturday night's series finale.
Martone was joined in his multi-point effort by linemates seniors Charlie Stramel and Daniel Russell who each tallied two assists, and by freshman Ryker Lee who added an assist alongside a late empty net goal. Junior Maxim Strbak provided an insurance goal in the third period and senior Matt Basgall picked up his sixth assist of the season.
MSU out-shot Notre Dame 47-25 and held a 39-30 advantage in face-offs won. Stramel was 14-8 from the dot while sophomore Nathan Mackie was 8-3 in his reps from the fourth line. Junior goaltender Trey Augustine was strong in goal making 24 saves, good for a .960 save percentage on the night.
How It Happened
The Spartans killed off an Irish power play mid-way through the first period that saw the two sides skating 3-on-4 and 4-on-5 before MSU finished the kill. Augustine made two big saves on back-to-back shots as the final Spartan was released from the penalty box. Martone struck just two minutes later, finding the back of the net on a feed from Stramel and Russell. Stramel found Martone in the slot, who deked past the Notre Dame goaltender.
Martone scored his second of the night on a power play just six minutes into the second period to give MSU a 2-0 lead. Lee made a cross-ice pace to Martone who was waiting to strike from the circle. Notre Dame went on a late power play, getting themselves on the board at the 17:07 mark of the period to cut the Spartan lead to 2-1.
Strbak added an insurance goal for MSU just before the mid-way point of the third period, ripping a shot from just inside the circle after Stramel passed it back for his and Russell's second assists of the night. Lee added to the damage with an empty netter with less a minute to play. One of the top moments of the night was when senior goaltender Dolan Gilbert entered the game at the 19:06 mark of the third to make his Spartan debut. Gilbert is a South Bend native who joined the team as an emergency goalie in 2023-24 before dressing as the third goalie for MSU in 2024-25 and 2025-26.
