SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Top-ranked Michigan State hockey earned its first six-point sweep in conference play on Saturday night, defeating Notre Dame by a final score of 3-1 from Compton Family Ice Arena.
"It's hard to sweep on the road in our conference," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "I thought Trey (Augustine) played really well for us; we definitely needed him there tonight."
The Spartans improve to 9-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in Big Ten action. MSU earned all six points towards the conference standings this weekend and now sit at 11 points (of a possible 12) through four games. Notre Dame falls to 3-8-1 (0-6-0 B1G) despite strong play from its goaltender over the weekend. Big Ten action continues next week when Michigan State hosts Wisconsin in Munn Ice Arena on November 21-22.
Freshman Porter Martone scored his third goal of the series on Saturday, while freshman Ryker Lee scored his second in as many games. Junior Tommi Mannisto added a late empty-net goal for his sixth of the season. Six different Spartans tallied assists including freshman Anthony Romani, senior Travis Shoudy, senior Charlie Stramel, sophomore Owen West, junior Maxim Strbak and senior Tiernan Shoudy.
Junior goaltender Trey Augustine turned in another stellar performance making 28 saves with a .966 save percentage. Augustine finished the weekend with 52 saves, stopping .963 percent of the shots he faced. A win on Saturday gave Augustine 50 for his career at Michigan State, making him one of just four active goaltenders with 50 or more wins in net. Augustine did so in 74 career starts, 14 fewer than the next lowest active goalie.
Michigan State out-shot Notre Dame 33-29 overall and held a 33-30 advantage at the dot where Stramel won .571 percent of his face-offs. Stramel was 26-17 (.605) on face-offs in the series.
How It Happened
Lee opened the scoring just 90 seconds into the contest with his second goal of the series. Travis Shoudy started the break after a face-off win, before Romani found Lee waiting on the back doorstep with a no-look, back-handed pass. A Notre Dame forward leaked through the Spartan defense in the closing seconds of the period, getting a one-on-one chance against Augustine, but the Spartan junior stood tall to deny the Irish.
Stramel connected with Martone for their second scoring combination of the weekend just 4:17 into the second period. Notre Dame turned the puck over at the blueline allowing Stramel to find Martone waiting to score in the crease. Notre Dame cut the Spartan lead to 2-1 at the 9:43 mark of the second, scoring on a power play.
Mannisto appeared to have scored the third goal of the evening for MSU just under seven minutes into the third period, but it was called back for goalie interference after a Spartan skater was shoved into the Notre Dame goaltender. The Irish were searching for an equalizer late in the period, forcing Augustine to make a pair of saves in quick succession with under three minutes to play in regulation. Notre Dame pulled its goalie out of the crease with two minutes to go, but just 23 second later Mannisto would get his goal back after a well thought out play off a face-off win. Strbak swung the puck around the boards to a streaking Mannisto, who out-skated his defender to score on an empty net.
