Wrestling Shuts Out LIU, 34-0

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Michigan State wrestling opened its dual season on Friday night against LIU, sweeping the Sharks 34-0 inside Pratt Recreation Center.
The Spartans open the season 1-0 ahead of their second dual of the weekend against Rider on Sunday, November 16. LIU falls to 0-3 on the season. Friday night was a reunion of sorts for MSU and former Spartan Jay Nivison, who is in his first season as an assistant coach at LIU.
Redshirt junior Nick Corday kicked things off for the Spartans at 125 pounds against LIU's Sawyer Ostroff. Corday trailed 3-1 after the second period but turned things around in the third with 10 unanswered points thanks to two full sets of back points. Redshirt senior Andy Hampton started a stretch of seven straight Spartan wins by decision at 133 pounds, knocking off Branden Rozanski, 2-0.
Redshirt sophomore Jaden Crumpler surrendered an early takedown at 141 pounds but tied things up at 3-3 after a pair of escapes and a locked hands call. Crumpler worked a single leg to earn a late takedown in the second period to lead 6-3 before coming away from a 6-5 win. Redshirt sophomore Clayton Jones kept things rolling at 149 pounds after a third period ankle pick takedown secured his 7-3 decision victory.
Making his dual debut for MSU was redshirt freshman Darius Marines at 157 pounds against No. 33-ranked Brayden Roberts. Marines earned a second period reversal en route to a 3-1 decision in his first dual. Graduate DJ Shannon made his return from injury at 165 pounds, winning 8-7 after a match winning takedown at the edge of the mat with :46 seconds remaining.
The second Spartan making his debut in the Green and White on Friday night was graduate transfer Connor O'Neill at 174 pounds. O'Neill took a commanding 7-1 lead in the first period after a takedown and four near-fall. A takedown early in the third gave him an 11-2 lead before an LIU takedown took away his major decision, resulting in an 11-7 decision. Redshirt sophomore Luke Vanadia returned from injury to make his dual debut for Michigan State on Saturday. Vanadia trailed 3-1 after one but a quick four-point swing put him ahead 5-3 after an escape and a quick takedown to start the second period. He locked up the riding point to win his first career dual match, 8-3.
Michigan State got back-to-back wins by tech fall at 197 pounds and heavyweight. Redshirt junior Kael Wisler made his first dual appearance for MSU since February 2024. Wisler had the points flowing late in the match with a takedown and four near-fall at the buzzer of the second period and two takedowns with four near-fall in the third to win 20-3. Returning NCAA qualifier Max Vanadia made quick work at heavyweight with six takedowns and a reversal to win 20-5.
