Wrestling Drops Dual at Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Michigan State wrestling's comeback bid fell short on Sunday afternoon, falling to Rider on the road by a final score of 24-16 at Alumni Gym.
The Spartans move to 1-1 on the season in dual meets ahead of the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia on Sunday, November 23. MSU will compete against alongside Central Michigan, Drexel, Edinboro, Frankling & Marshall, Harvard, Lock Haven, Oregon State, Penn, Rutgers and Virginia Tech in the tournament.
Rider took the first three bouts of the afternoon after starting the dual at 125 pounds to get out to an 11-0 lead.
Redshirt sophomore Clayton Jones got Michigan State on the board first in the 149-pound match, pinning No. 33-ranked Dylan Layton in 3:38 in the second period. Jones locked in a far-side cradle earning a full set of back points before finishing off the pin.
Redshirt freshman Darius Marines kept that momentum going for MSU at 157 pounds, bringing the Spartans back within two points in the team score following a 5-1 decision. Marines secured a first period takedown and accumulated over 2:00 minutes of riding time in the win.
Rider bounced back to take matches at 165 and 174 to build a 21-9 lead over MSU entering the final three bouts of the dual.
Redshirt sophomore Luke Vanadia earned a bonus point win over JP Hangey at 184, winning 16-3. Vanadia earned four takedowns in the match as he searched for the tech fall late, also racking up over 3:00 of riding time in the process.
Redshirt junior Kael Wisler went to sudden victory against No. 21-ranked Brock Zurawski at 197 pounds but was taken down in overtime to narrowly fall by decision, 8-5.
At heavyweight, redshirt sophomore Max Vanadia trailed 4-1 heading into the third period against Steyn De Lange. Vanadia made a quick escape to trail 4-2 before locking in a single leg takedown with just over a minute remaining in the contest to go up 5-4. He rode out the remainder of the period to earn the riding time point and win by decision, 6-4.
