Wrestling Drops Home Opener Against American
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Competing in its home dual opener on Thursday night, Michigan State wrestling fell to American by a final score of 20-17, from historic Jenison Field House.
MSU moves to 3-2 on the season while American improves to 3-4. The Spartans are in action next at the Southern Scuffle, competing in tournament action on January 3-4, 2026.
Redshirt junior Nick Corday improved to 4-0 in duals on the season to get things started for Michigan State with a 4-1 decision over JJ Peace. Corday won a first period scramble to earn what proved to be the winning takedown.
American won bouts at 133, 141 and 149 pounds to build a 13-3 lead over Michigan State nearing the mid-way point of the dual.
No. 32-ranked redshirt freshman Darius Marines got MSU back on the board in the 157-pound bout, winning a 7-3 decision over Cameron Milheim to cut into the team score deficit. Marines has now won 10 of his last 11 matches this season. Redshirt sophomore Jack Conley kept the momentum going at 165 pounds earning his first career dual victory with a 4-2 decision over Austin Craft.
The Eagles got back on the board with a decision at 174 with graduate Connor O'Neill falling to a last second takedown in his bout, giving American a 16-9 lead. A major decision at 184 pounds extended American's lead to 20-9.
MSU bounced back at 197 pounds where redshirt junior Kael Wisler accumulated over 2:00 of riding time in a 20-4 tech fall victory. Rounding out the dual, No. 27/30-ranked redshirt sophomore Max Vanadia earned a 4-0 decision over Emmanuel Ulrich to improve to a team-best 13-2 on the year.
