GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the second-straight season, No. 3/3-ranked Michigan State is bringing the Great Lakes Invitational Championship home to East Lansing, this time following a 4-1 victory over host Michigan Tech on Monday night from Van Andel Arena. It marks Michigan State's 14th GLI title overall and is the first time the Spartans have gone back-to-back since 1999/2000.
MSU improves to 14-4 on the season, while Michigan Tech drops to 11-7-2. The Spartans are set for a brief return to Munn Ice Arena on Sunday, January 4 when the U.S. National Team Development Program arrives in East Lansing for a 4:00 p.m. exhibition.
Michigan State was out-shot 33-31 but owned a staggering 39-21 advantage from the face-off dot thanks to senior forward Tiernan Shoudy's 15-4 performance. MSU's penalty kill was a perfect 3-for-3 on Monday night due in part to junior goaltender Trey Augustine's 32 saves.
Senior forward Charlie Stramel scored two goals for the second consecutive night, giving him four goals and five total points on the weekend. Stramel was joined in scoring by freshman forward Anthony Romani and junior forward Tommi Mannisto. Romani added an assist to give him four points on two goals and two assists for the weekend. Mannisto's empty net goal late gave him his second goal of the weekend as well.
Contributing assists on Monday were junior defenseman Patrick Geary, sophomore defenseman Colin Ralph and senior forward Daniel Russell, who tallied two. All three finished the weekend with a trio of assists.
Stramel was named Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Augustine, Romani and Geary.
How It Happened
Both sides were held scoreless in the first period with Michigan State holding a 14-10 edge in shots on goal and a 15-5 advantage on the face-off dot. MSU's best chance of the period came early when an odd-man rush led by junior forward Gavin O'Connell resulted in a diving save from the Michigan Tech goaltender, who would later stop a point blank shot by Stramel in a similar fashion.
Romani broke the 0-0 tie mid-way through the second period, scoring his second goal of the weekend off a deflection at the 10:26 mark. A scrum in front of the net resulted in MSU's second goal of the night. Geary put a shot on goal with under 2:00 remaining and looked to clean up his own rebound before Stramel got his stick on it to knock it in.
A giveaway by Michigan Tech behind their own net resulted in the third Spartan goal of the night. Romani forced the turnover after a sloppy pass and found Stramel waiting in the slot for a one-timer.
The Huskies got on the board 8:48 into third period on a goal from Carson Latimer.
With less than 2:00 to play in regulation, Michigan Tech pulled its goalie to give themselves an extra attacker trailing 3-1. While the Spartans looked to give Stramel an opportunity for the hat trick, it was Mannisto who capitalized on the empty net to score the insurance goal with 1:05 to play.
