Sophomore Lorenzo Pinili Earns Spot on All-Tournament Team
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team battled difficult conditions on Sunday, posted the third-lowest team score of the day and finished in third place among 18 teams at the Big Ten Championships, played at the Baltimore Country Club in Timonium, Md.
The 18-team field battled strong winds throughout the final round on the par-70, 7,240-yard course just outside of Baltimore.
The Spartans shot a 10-over par 290 in the final round, tied for the third-lowest team round of the day.
Michigan State finished the three-day, 54-hole event with a combined 14-over par 854 (281-283-290) and moved up five places after entering the third round tied for eighth.
UCLA came back from a six-shot deficit after Saturday's second round, posted the best team round of the day at 2-over par 282 and topped the field at 2-over par 856 (278-282-282). Illinois led through the first two rounds and finished in second place at 3-over par 857 (270-282-291).
The Spartans finished in third place at 14-over par 854, Oregon finished in fourth place (15-over par 855) and Ohio State rounded out the top-five teams (17-over par 857).
"I can't even begin to describe how proud I am of this team," Head Coach Casey Lubahn said. "To do what these guys have done all semester and to grind and find a way to get to where we are today is a testament to the hard work, dedication and determination that they all have. We didn't win, but we showed we can compete with the best and it's one of the most rewarding Big Ten tournaments during my career."
This is the second-straight top-four team finish for the Spartans and the fifth time in the last six tournaments that MSU has finished among the top four teams.
Pinili completed a strong weekend of play with a 1-over par 71, despite the challenging conditions. He tied for fifth place at 1-under par 209 (70-68-71) and was just six golfers in the field of 93 to finish under par.
By finishing among the top-five individuals, Pinili was selected to the Big Ten Championship All-Tournament Team.
Junior Caleb Bond bounced back from a difficult second round on Saturday (6-over par 76) with a 2-under par 68 in Sunday's final round. He finished in 11th place at 1-over par 211 (67-76-68). Bond's round of 2-under par 68 was tied for the lowest in the entire field on Sunday and was just one of five under-par rounds on the afternoon.
