No. 17 Spartans Kick Off B1G Season at Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa - No. 17 Michigan State gymnastics kicks off Big Ten action this weekend at Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. ET inside Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Saturday's meet will stream on B1G+.
MSU is 17th in this week's RoadtoNationals rankings after a third-place, 196.225 season-opening finish behind Michigan and California and ahead of Kentucky at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad last weekend. MSU's 196.225 was its fourth-best season-opening score in program history.
The Spartans also sit inside the top 25 in two team event rankings - No. 8 on beam (49.275 average) and No. 21 on bars (49.025). Individually, senior Sage Kellerman ranks in a tie sixth on bars after a 9.925 on the event at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad, while junior Isabella Trostel made her first-ever lineup appearance with a 9.925 on beam come in 10th in this week's rankings on the event.
Junior MaKayla Tucker made her collegiate all-around debut last weekend, scoring a 39.200 to finish second. She also scored a career-high 9.875 on bars. Tucker's 39.200 sits in a tie for 24th nationally.
B1G SUCCESS
Since 2022, MSU has posted a 31-5 (.972) record in Big Ten regular season action, recording a perfect 9-0 record in 2024, 8-1 records in both 2023 and 2025 and a 6-3 record during the 2022 season.
The Spartans have not dropped a Big Ten opener since falling to Iowa at home on Jan. 12 during the 2022 season. That result was also MSU's only Big Ten home loss across its five losses over the last four seasons.
SCOUTING IOWA
Iowa ranks 27th in this week's RoadtoNationals rankings with a two-week average of 195.413 and sits at 3-2 overall after a home quad meet win over Illinois State, Illinois and Iowa State last week. The Hawkeyes put up a season-high 196.000 in that meet.
Iowa also holds top-25 team event rankings on vault (48.975, No. 24) and bars (49.100, No. 15).
MSU has won its last five matchups with the Hawkeyes dating back to the 2023 Big Ten Championships. Last season, the Spartans finished ahead of the Hawkeyes at the Big Ten Championships and won the Big Four Meet at Iowa ahead of the second-place Hawkeyes. The Spartans last dropped a meet against the Hawkeyes on Feb. 11 during the 2023 season on the road.
UP NEXT
The Spartans host UCLA on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. inside the Breslin Center for their home opener. The meet will be broadcast nationally on FOX.
