Hockey Sweeps No. 2/2 Wisconsin in Madison

MADISON, Wis. – No. 3/4-ranked Michigan State hockey completed a road sweep of No. 2/2-ranked Wisconsin on Friday night, taking down the Badgers, 4-1, from the Kohl Center.
MSU improves to 17-5-0 overall and 8-4-0 in conference action, jumping into second in the B1G with 24 points. Wisconsin falls to 15-5-2 with an 8-4-0 mark in B1G play alongside 22 points. The Spartans conclude the season series with the Badgers taking seven of a possible 12 points.
Michigan State went a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill in game two and was 8-for-8 on the week against the nation's No. 4-ranked power play unit. Junior goaltender Trey Augustine was nearly spotless in Friday night's win, making 30 saves for a .968 save percentage. Augustine improved to 13-5-2 for his career against Top 5-ranked opponents.
Senior Daniel Russell scored twice, giving himself a three-goal series, and was joined in scoring by freshman Anthony Romani and sophomore Shane Vansaghi. The Spartans got two assists from freshman Ryker Lee and senior Charlie Stramel. Freshman Porter Martone, freshman Matt Lahey, freshman Eric Nilson and sophomore Colin Ralph finished with one assist apiece.
How It Happened
Crisp passing from Michigan State's second line led to a quick goal as Vansaghi found the back of the net 1:17 into the action. MSU killed a Badger power play mid-way through the period but not before Russell made his presence felt for the second straight night as he scored a short-handed goal to put the Spartans ahead 2-0.
Russell wasted no time continuing his strong play in the series scoring his second goal of the night on an MSU power play at the 12:42 mark. Michigan State killed a second Badger power play that carried over into the second period and Augustine made 14 first period saves in a strong all-around effort.
Michigan State killed a pair of Badger power plays in the second period and got a late deflection goal off the stick of Romani that put the Spartans up 4-0. Augustine made another nine saves in the period to keep Wisconsin off the scoreboard.
Wisconsin broke up the shut-out bid with just 49 seconds remaining in regulation. The Spartans killed their final penalty of the evening but the Badgers scored as MSU was exiting the penalty box.
