WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Michigan State wrestling started strong but ultimately fell on the road to Purdue on Friday night, 27-9, from Holloway Gymnasium on Big Ten Network.
MSU moves to 3-5 on the season and 0-3 in Big Ten duals, while Purdue improves to 9-3 and 2-2 in conference duals.
The Spartans rattled off three early victories in the dual to take a 9-4 lead in the team score through four weights. Michigan State got hard fought decisions from each of redshirt junior 197-pounder Kael Wisler, redshirt junior heavyweight Josh Terrill and redshirt junior 125-pounder Nick Corday.
Wisler got MSU on the board first with a ranked upset over No. 20-ranked Ben Vanadia at 197 pounds. He trailed 6-3 in the third period before two takedowns, which included a late takedown in the final minute of the bout, provided him enough of a cushion to account for Vanadia's secured riding time point.
Terrill grinded out a 2-1 decision over Hayden Filipovich at heavyweight to put MSU ahead 6-4 in team score. Corday took a 0-0 match into sudden victory at 125 pounds before securing a takedown and a full set of back points to win 7-0.
Purdue won the final six bouts of the evening to take the dual.
