Wrestling Hits the Road at Purdue, Indiana

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestling is on the road for a pair of Big Ten duals this weekend, traveling to Purdue on Friday, January 23 for a 5:00 p.m. dual on Big Ten Network. MSU returns to the mat on Sunday, January 25 for a 2:00 p.m. dual at No. 25-ranked Indiana.
The First Whistle
Redshirt sophomore 133-pounder Caleb Weiand and redshirt junior 197-pounder Kael Wisler each moved up in the rankings this week with Weiand moving to #30 via FloWrestling and Wisler improving to #27 in both the FloWrestling and InterMat rankings.
Michigan State is coming off a 31-12 loss to #11 Indiana last weekend at Jenison Field House where a trio of Spartans picked up wins. Redshirt freshman 157-pounder Darius Marines picked up a late fall over Ryan Bennett 6:33 into the match, and Wisler and redshirt junior heavyweight Josh Terrill earned decisions. Wisler picked up a takedown in sudden victory to defeat Dylan Connell, 9-6. Marines has been in and out of the rankings this season, enjoying a 15-6 record along with a 6-1 record in duals this season. He's posted a team-best 21 team points in duals in his first season in the lineup.
The Spartans are 3-4 in duals overall and 0-2 in Big Ten action heading into this weekend. MSU is looking forward to three straight home duals as the team enters February, facing Northwestern next weekend on February 1 at 2:00 p.m.
Purdue is 8-3 overall and 1-2 in the Big ten coming off a 24-9 loss to then #21 Rutgers last weekend. The Boilermakers opened last week with a 28-11 win over #18 Maryland on the road. Michigan State is 47-30-1 all-time against Purdue, but has not faced Purdue in dual action since January 16, 2022 in a 17-16 MSU win. The Spartans won the dual on criteria to knock off the then No. 12-ranked Boilermakers thanks to wins from Cam Caffey, Layne Malczewski, Caleb Fish, Peyton Omania and Rayvon Foley. Purdue's Ben Vanadia is the brother of MSU's Luke and Max Vanadia. The Boilermaker Vanadia is 1-3 all-time against opponents on his brothers' team.
Indiana is 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten following a 26-12 win over Maryland last Sunday. The Hoosiers will take on top-ranked Penn State on Friday night prior to welcoming the Spartans to Bloomington. Michigan State is 52-28-3 all-time against Indiana, but has lost the last two duals against the Hoosiers in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. Prior to that MSU had defeated Indiana in five straight duals from 2018-2023.
