No. 21 Gymnastics Sets Season High in Front of 9,887 Fans at the Breslin Center

EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 21 Michigan State gymnastics finished second behind No. 5 UCLA, 197.425-196.900, in front of a program-record 9,887 fans inside the Breslin Center Sunday afternoon.Â
MSU's 196.900 is a season high, topping its previous season high by nearly seventh tenths of a point. UCLA moves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten with the win, while MSU drops to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the league. Sunday's attendance record of 9,887 fans surpassed the previous record of 6,250, set last season against Michigan, by over 3,500 fans.Â
The Spartans also set team season highs on two events – vault (49.300) and floor (49.150) and tied a season-high 49.275 on beam.Â
"I'm extremely proud of what the team did today," said head coach Mike Rowe. We're almost at 197, and that's where we have to be. The attendance record is really exciting. The Breslin is great because as soon as they hear the competition, who's coming here, the tickets will sell like crazy. The energy is electric. The more amped they are, the better they score."Â
UCLA held a slight 49.350-49.300 lead after the first rotation, opening up on bars while MSU started the meet on vault. Senior Sage Kellerman led the Spartans with a season-high 9.925 in the anchor spot to finish second. Sophomore Cady Duplissis finished third with a stuck Yurchenko 1.5 for a career-high 9.900. Senior Olivia Zsarmani scored a 9.875 in the No. 5 spot, while senior Nikki Smith scored a 9.825, freshman Korynne Marquart added a 9.775 and junior MaKayla Tucker posted a 9.750.Â
MSU scored a 48.975 on bars in the second rotation, dropping behind UCLA 98.650-98.275. Kellerman anchored with a 9.875 to finish in a tie for third to lead the Spartans, while Zsarmani added a season-high 9.850 in the fifth spot. Senior Naya Howard scored a 9.800 and Smith and freshman Lilia Cosman scored 9.725s.Â
Three Spartans set either a career or season high on beam in the third rotation to help MSU to a season-high-tying 49.275 on the event. Smith scored a season-high 9.925 to finish third on the event and Cosman added a career-high 9.900 in the anchor spot. Tucker also posted a season-high 9.875. Junior Kendall Abney scored a 9.825 and Duplissis led off with a 9.750.Â
UCLA pulled away in the final rotation on beam, but the Spartans put up their highest event score of the season with a 49.350 on floor to close out the meet. Smith and Tucker scored matching 9.925s to finish in a tie for second on the event, with Tucker's score tying a career high. Senior Stephanie Lebster scored a career-high 9.875 in leadoff position, Cosman scored a career-high 9.850 and Duplissis and junior Gabi Ortiz scored 9.775s.Â
Smith finished second in the all-around behind Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles with a season-high 39.400. Tucker finished fifth.Â
