NOTES TO KNOW:
• Michigan State moved up one spot to No. 2 in the USCHO.com poll and No. 2 in the USA Hockey poll this week. MSU has not been ranked lower than No. 4 in either poll this season.
• In their final tune-up before resuming Big Ten play this weekend, the Spartans defeated the U.S. National Team Development Program U-18's in an exhibition, 4-2. Austin Baker, Anthony Romani, Cayden Lindstrom and Charlie Stramel scored goals for Michigan State.
• Freshman defenseman Matt Lahey, a 2024 Vancouver Canucks draft pick, made his first appearance in Green & White during the exhibition against the USNTDP.
• The Spartans had four forwards participate in the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship, missing both games at the GLI and the exhibition against the USNTDP. Freshman Eric Nilson (Sweden) won gold and freshman Porter Martone (Canada) won bronze becoming the 17th and 18th Spartans alltime to medal at World Juniors. Freshman Ryker Lee and sophomore Shane Vansaghi both participated for Team USA, falling in the quarterfinals.
• Martone was named captain of Team Canada, previously captaining Canada to gold at the 2024 U-18 World Championship.
• MSU is coming off its second straight Great Lakes Invitational championship after defeating Ferris State  (5-2) and Michigan Tech (4-1) in Grand Rapids, Mich. on December 28-29. It's Michigan State's 14th title at the GLI all-time and the first time MSU has gone back-to-back since the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
• Senior Charlie Stramel was named Tournament MVP alongside junior Trey Augustine, junior Patrick Geary and freshman Anthony Romani who were all named to the All-Tournament Team.
• Michigan State's top line forwards Daniel Russell - Charlie Stramel - Porter Martone have recorded 60 points this season on 25 goals and 35 assists. They are a combined +55 with Stramel leading with a +21 to Russell's +19 and Martone's +15.
• Stramel is #9 nationally in face-off wins (222), #30 in assists per game (0.72) and #18 in points per game (1.28), leading the Spartans in points with 23 (10-13-23).
• Martone ranks #8 nationally in goals per game (0.69) and is #19 in points per game (1.25), ranking second on the team in points with 20 (11-9-20) despite missing the GLI.
• Junior goaltender Trey Augustine is among the best in the country ranking #1 in shutouts (3), #4 in goals against average (1.69) and #2 in save percentage (.938). Augustine leads the Big Ten in all three categories.
• Michigan State ranks #1 nationally in scoring defense (1.72), #12 in scoring offense (3.50) and #3 in scoring margin (+1.78). MSU leads the Big Ten in scoring defense and is third in scoring offense.
