COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 2/2-ranked Michigan State hockey resumed Big Ten action on Friday night with a 6-2 victory over Ohio State from the Schottenstein Center. The Spartans matched a season-high six goals, previously scoring six against Northern Michigan on October 25.
"Really liked our start tonight," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "We executed at a high level and were ready to go. We scored three goals in maybe 40 seconds so high execution there. In the second we took some penalties and it was hard to get into a rhythm. They're a good team and weren't going to roll over. I thought Trey (Augustine) had to be really good for us and we got back to our game in the third."
The Spartans improve to 15-4-0 on the season with a 6-3 record in Big Ten action while Ohio State falls to 6-12-1 overall and 2-7 conference games. Saturday's series finale from Columbus is set for 5:00 p.m. on B1G+.
MSU was outshot 32-27 but held a 34-32 advantage from the face-off dot and led 13-10 in blocked shots. The Spartans were good on the power play going 2-for-4 on their opportunities, including scoring on a 5-on-3 situation. MSU's penalty kill was 5-for-6 on the night.
Michigan State was led by a career-best four-point performance by freshman Porter Martone on Friday, who scored twice and assisted on a pair of goals. Senior Charlie Stramel extended his multi-goal game streak to three with two goals and an assist in game one. Also scoring for the Spartans was freshmen Anthony Romani and Ryker Lee.
Senior Daniel Russell eclipsed the 100-career point mark with his three assists on Friday, while senior Matt Basgall added two assists to match Stramel. Freshman Cayden Lindstrom, senior Tiernan Shoudy and Lee also added assists for MSU.
Junior Trey Augustine made 30 saves in goal, good for a .938 save percentage.
How It Happened
After 13 minutes of relatively little action in Friday night's game, Michigan State exploded for three goals in a 23 second span just past the mid-way point of the first period. Romani opened the scoring at 13:23 and was followed by goals from Martone at 13:30 and Stramel at 13:46.
Lindstrom centered a pass for Romani in the slot to open the scoring. After a lengthy delay for an Ohio State coaches' review, Stramel found Martone one-on-one with the Buckeye goaltender for his first goal of the period. Stramel got one of his own just seconds later scoring from the left circle.
The Spartans capitalized on their first power play chance of the evening when Martone re-directed a shot past the Ohio State goaltender for his second goal of the game. Basgall sent a shot in from the blue line that found the stick of Martone in front of the net.
Ohio State got on the board in the second period finding the back of the net at the 12:39 mark. The Buckeyes cut MSU's lead in half early in the third period with a power play goal 2:30 in.
After Ohio State cut the Spartan lead to two at 4-2, Michigan State was quick to respond when Stramel scored a power play goal of his own. Consecutive Buckeye penalties provided MSU with a 5-on-3 advantage and Stramel took advantage. Four minutes later, Lee dazzled the crowd with a spin-o-rama goal to provide the Spartans with a 6-2 lead.
