Wrestling Takes Down Northwestern at Home

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestling earned its first Big Ten dual victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, taking down Northwestern, 22-20, from inside Jenison Field House on Big Ten Network.
MSU improves to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in Big Ten action while Northwestern falls to 3-6 (1-5 B1G).
The Spartans got out to a 9-0 lead after No. 23-ranked redshirt junior 197-pounder Kael Wisler battled to a 10-3 decision in the opening bout. Redshirt junior heavyweight Josh Terrill kept the crowd engaged with a first period fall over Northwestern's Gabe Christenson in 2:11. It was the fourth consecutive Big Ten dual victory for Terrill.
Redshirt sophomore 133-pounder Caleb Weiand grinded out a 1-0 decision over Luis Bazan to increase Michigan State's lead to 12-3. After a Wildcat win by fall at 141 pounds, MSU responded with its second pin of the afternoon. Redshirt sophomore 149-pounder Clayton Jones got back in the win column with a second period fall over August Hibler using a cradle.
Redshirt freshman 157-pounder Darius Marines picked up the final win of the day for Michigan State, earning a late major decision using a third period takedown in the closing seconds to secure the 10-2 win and put MSU up 22-9.
Northwestern took the final three bouts of the afternoon with a decision and two major decision victories as Michigan State held on for a 22-20 final.
