Spartan Men’s Tennis Earns Back-to-Back Wins in Conference Opening Weekend

Michigan State shows powerful performance at home against pair of ranked opponents.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis concluded its first weekend at home with a 5-2 victory over No. 29 Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center, as the Spartans posted their second ranked win over an opponent of the weekend.
After knocking off No. 40 Nebraska, 4-1, on Friday, Michigan State knocked off 29th-ranked Wisconsin on Sunday. The Badgers were coming off a 4-0 sweep at No. 52 Michigan on Friday night in Ann Arbor.
The Spartans once again claimed the doubles point on Sunday afternoon to get an early lead over the Badgers. At No. 2 doubles, Matthew Forbes teamed up with Ozan Baris to claim the first win of the day over Wisconsin's Tomas Zlatohlavek and Edouard Aubert, 6-3. Mitchell Sheldon and his partner Aristotelis Thanos then defeated Patrik Meszaros and Matthew Fullerton (WIS), 6-4. Taym Alazmeh and Danial Rakhmatullayev faced Ferdinand Kloesters and Michael Minasyan (WIS), but their match was left unfinished with the score tied 4-4.
Between doubles and singles action, MSU unveiled its newest additions to the All-American banners at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center, honoring senior Ozan Baris and sophomore Matthew Forbes for the All-American accolades in the fall.
In singles play, the Spartans came out victorious in four of six matches. Forbes, ranked No. 11 nationally, defeated Partrik Meszaros in a straight-set 6-2, 6-2 win. Following Forbes' lead, junior Taym Alazmeh defeated Ferdinand Kloesters of Wisconsin, 6-2, 6-4. At No. 1 singles, junior Aristotelis Thanos battled Michael Minasyan, and came out with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Senior David Saye put up a good fight against Sachiv Kumar, but ultimately fell, 6-0, 6-3.
Spartan sophomore Mitchell Sheldon and Wisconsin's Tomas Zlatohlavek took their match to three sets, with Sheldon claiming the 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to strengthen the Spartan lead. Sophomore Danial Rakhmatullayev and Edouard Aubert (WIS) had a thrilling three-set match. Aubert took the victory 1-6, 7-6, (7-5), 10-8, ending in a super-tiebreaker.
The Spartans ended the weekend with wins against two ranked opponents, giving them plenty of momentum heading into their upcoming road trip to Penn State, this Friday, March 13, at 2 p.m.
