Riley Hough Finishes Fourth in 10,000m in Day One of Big Ten Championships

LINCOLN, Neb. – On the first day of the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Spartans faced 90-degree temperatures and weather delays, but both the men's and women's teams found the scoreboard at the Nebraska Outdoor Track and Field Complex in Lincoln, Nebraska.
In the final race of the night after a two-hour weather delay due to inclement weather in the area, Riley Hough finished fourth in the men's 10,000m with a time of 29:52.02. His first collegiate 10k was No. 3 all-time in Spartan history. He earned five points for the Michigan State men.
Elle Adrian got the Spartan women on the board with an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw. She matched her eighth-place performance from last season's B1G Championship. Her first throw of the day (58.62m) was her best and propelled her into the final. She couldn't top that as Minnesota's Anthonett Nabwe won the event (69.22m).
In the men's hammer throw, Xavier Griffiths finished ninth with a best throw of 65.31m. He reached the final with a throw of 65.13m in his first attempt. He bettered that throw on his fifth attempt but did not move up the standings. Angelos Mantzouranis of Minnesota finished first (75.98m).
Through the first five events of the decathlon, Dylan Terryberry stands eighth with 3,818 points. He started the day slowly with an 11th-place finish in the 100m, crossing the line in 11.03 to earn 854 points. Terryberry captured 790 points with another 11th-place finish in the long jump (6.90m). In the shot put, he set a new personal best, finishing second with a throw of 14.27m which was good for 745 points. Terryberry added another PR in the high jump (1.85m), adding 670 points to his total. The strong effort in the high jump was good enough for ninth place in the event. He ended the day running a 51.23 in the 200m for an 11th-place finish and 759 points.
Tess Roman stands in seventh place after four events of the heptathlon with 3,158 points. She started the day finishing eighth in the 100m with a time of 14.58, earning 898 points. In the high jump, Roman was sixth (1.68m), which was good for 830 points. She had another sixth-place finish in the shot put (11.57), earning 633 points. In the final event of the day, she set a personal best in the 200m with a time of 25.66, which was good for 827 points.
After she completed the first four events of the heptathlon, Roman came back to compete in the javelin. She reached the final but finished ninth with a throw of 49.30m.
On the track, Kate Stewart-Barnett began her championship, advancing to the final of the women's 1500m. She finished fourth in the second heat to qualify on time, crossing the line in 4:19.28. She was among the lead pack the whole race had the second-fastest outside of the automatic qualifiers. Sarah Forsyth (4:27.19) and Olivia Millen (4:28.68) finished 17th and 21st, respectively.
In the women's 10,000m, Meghan Beute ran 37:01.09 in her first collegiate 10k.
Day two of the championships will begin at 10:30 a.m. ET with the decathlon 110m hurdles. Field events will begin with Leila Barmore in the women's long jump at 1 p.m. ET.
