LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Michigan State rebounded from its first-round loss to Louisville in the Louisville International Tournament by defeating Murray State, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.
State won the first game easily behind the strong arms of seniors Jenna Wrobel and Jennifer Stroffe. Game proved to be a see-saw battle until the score was tied at 8-8 when the Racers took control, scoring the next seven points to end the game. The Spartans found their game rhythm again in game three using a different lineup that included middle Maren Witzel, who again provided a needed lift to MSU as it won 15-4. In game four Witzel was again a factor, teaming with Wrobel and junior Jenny Whitehead for several key blocks as the Spartans won the match with a 15-9 score.
Wrobel scored 17 kills, 15 digs and six blocks for the Spartans while sophomore Sarah Gustin was also a key player with 10 kills and six blocks. Witzel, who played in only two games, tallied three kills and seven block assists. Whitehead also played well with eight kills, six digs and eight blocks.
The Spartans conclude the tournament with a match at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday versus MCSA Russia.
