Volleyball Wins 1998 Debut

EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 17 Michigan State opened its 1998 season with a 15-6, 15-7, 15-11 win over Eastern Michigan on Sept. 4 in the L&L/MSU Volleyball Classic in East Lansing, Mich. Senior outside hitter Jenna Wrobel led the Spartans with 14 kills. Four other MSU players tallied six kills or better and 11 athletes saw playing time.
Freshman Erin Hartley started her MSU career in game two and finished the match with seven kills on 12 attempts to hit .500. She also added three service aces and two digs. Setter Christie Landry was the model of consistency with 37 assists, three kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Redshirt freshman middle Maren Witzel made her collegiate debut with three kills, two digs and two blocks, while senior Jennifer Stroffe played her first match in an MSU uniform after transferring from UC Santa Barbara. Stroffe tabbed two kills and two digs.
The Spartans climb to 1-0 on the season. In game one of the Classic, Pittsburgh defeated Central Michigan, 15-0, 15-13, 16-14. The MSU Classic continues on Saturday with Eastern Michigan and Pittsburgh meeting at 10 a.m. followed by Michigan State and Central Michigan at noon. In the nightcap, EMU and CMU meet at 5 p.m. as the Spartans and Pittsburgh close out the Classic at 7 p.m.
