EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State outside hitter Jenna Wrobel was named to the first-feam All-America squad it was announced today by the American Volleyball Coaches Association(AVCA). Wrobel joins two other Big Ten players on the 12-person first team. The award will be presented at the Marriott Madison West on Friday evening in Madison, Wis., site of the 1998 NCAA Final Four.
Wrobel, who became the all-time kills and attempts leader at Michigan State this fall, and ranks second in kills in the Big Ten record book, is just the third Michigan State player named to the first-team (Val Sterk and Dana Cooke were both honored in 1995 and Sterk repeated in 96).
The senior, who was named to the AVCA District 2 team for the second year in a row, is a four-time All-Big Ten team selection; only the third player in Big Ten history to be so honored. She tallied 30 or more kills in a match seven times in her career, four of those this season, including a school record-tying 36-kill effort in MSUs four-game loss to Wisconsin on Nov. 27.
Michigan State finished the 1998 season with a 23-7 record. The Spartans advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth-straight season, but lost in the first round to Pepperdine in five games.
The selections were made by the AVCA Division I All-America Committee: Julie Morgan, Illinois State, chair; Cindy Alvear, Pittsburgh; Sharon Dingman, Butler; Jolene Jordan Hoover, Clemson; Beth Launiere, Utah; Chris Poole, Arkansas; Patti Snyder-Park, Arizona State; Katie Weismiller, Indiana.
