Volleyball Improves To 4-2 At UMass Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. -- Michigan State got off to a 2-0 lead at the UMass Motorola Invitational Tournament in Amherst, Mass., on Friday, Sept. 10, defeating New Hampshire (15-6, 15-8, 15-10) and Southern Mississippi (15-3, 15-5, 15-8) to raise its season record to 4-2. Jessica Sanborn (Colbert, Wash.) combined for 27 kills on the day, including 15 kills with no errors on 17 attempts for a .882 hitting percentage, the fourth-best single-match mark in MSU history.
Erin Hartley (Midland, Mich.) hit 18 kills to go with three service aces and seven digs to lead MSU against New Hampshire as the Spartans hit .426 as a team. Michigan State added nine service aces but was hurt by 13 service errors.
The Spartans fell to an early 0-2 deficit in game one before running off seven-straight points, three of them Sanborn kills. In game two MSU raced to an early 8-1 lead before allowing New Hampshire to get back in the match. Up 9-8, reserve defensive specialist Kayleen Cook (Mendon, Mich.) sparked the Spartans with a diving dig as they went on to a 15-8 win. MSU jumped out to another 8-1 lead in game three but again left the door open as the Wildcats clawed their way back to a 10-8 score before the Spartans shut the door at 15-10.
Michigan State dispatched Southern Miss in the second match 15-3, 15-5, 15-8. MSU hit .487 as a team and added eight service aces. Along with Sanborn's record-setting performances, Sarah Gustin (Hesperia, Calif.) added 11 kills on .500 hitting, five digs and two blocks. Maren Witzel (Palmer, Alaska) added seven kills and a match-high seven digs in the win.
MSU got off to an early 6-0 lead in game one before USM scored two points. The teams traded 16 sideouts in a four-point span as the Golden Eagles tried to get back USM hurt itself with three consecutive errors to give MSU the win.
The Spartans found itself up 5-0 and coasted to an early 15-5 win in game two. Tammy Vonderheide served a stretch of six points and went high for the kill to end the game. The Spartans found themselves down 1-4 at the beginning of game three before Vonderheide dragged them out of a hole with her serve by serving four straight points to give them the lead. The Eagles did come back, but, ahead only 9-7, MSU used kills by Witzel and Sanborn to sideout and score to open the lead. At 14-7, Southern Miss delayed the inevitable with a tough kill but a hitting error gave MSU the last sideout it needed as Angela Morley (Holland, Mich.) ended the match with a kill over the middle.
