Wisconsin Beats Volleyball In Four Games

Madison, Wis. - A game one battle that lasted nearly 45 minutes was a prequel to the fight to come at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis., on Friday night. The Badgers finally pulled out a 3-1 win after two hours and 25 minutes, 15-9, 15-12, 13-15, 15-6.
Sarah Gustin led the Spartans with 20 kills, 10 digs and five blocks. Jenny Rood added a career-high16 kills, 18 digs and two block solos, while Jessica Sanborn contributed 15 kills, nine digs and two blocks. Setter Christie Landry put up 64 assists to go with eight digs and three blocks, while Angela Morley added 14 kills and four blocks.
As a team MSU hit .173 to UW's .197. Wisconsin outblocked MSU 19-13, while the Spartans outdug the Badgers 75-70. Michigan State recorded a season-high eight block solos on the match, tied for fourth-best in a four-game match in school history.
In game one, after five ties, Michigan State pulled out to a 9-6 lead. Wisconsin fought back to tie the match at nine. MSU sided out after a timeout but traded 23 more sideouts after that before UW took a 10-9 lead and eventually played to a 15-9 win. Gustin led the Spartans with seven kills while Rood notched a career high eight digs in the game.
Game two was a relatively quick 35 minutes. MSU took the early 3-2 lead the Badgers broke it wide open and jumped to a 10-5 lead. Michigan State rallied with five-straight points behind three block solos, two by Gustin and one by Morley. Back came Wisconsin. The Red and White was up 14-10 but the Spartans held them off to score twice more before the Badgers won 15-12. The Badgers outhit MSU .159-.111 but MSU won the blocking game, 10-2. Gustin had six kills and four blocks while Rood added another five digs.
MSU raced to a 6-2 lead in game three behind two service aces by Morley and kills by Gustin and Erin Hartley. UW countered with three-straight points to pull within one at 6-5. Michigan State widened its lead to 9-5 with kills by Rood and Sanborn and a Badger error. Again Came Wisconsin, however, to tie the score at nine. More solid play by the Spartans saw them to a 14-10 lead. UW fought back to within one at 14-13 before Rood ended the game with a tool off the block.
After trading eight sideouts the Spartans scored first in the fourth game. But, the Badgers sided out on an MSU service error and rung up nine-straight to go up 9-1. MSU showed life and scored four straight to get to within fourth at 5-9 but would get no further, losing 15-6.
