Volleyball Loses In Three To Penn State

University Park, Pa. - Michigan State lost to No. 11 Penn State 7-15, 5-15, 7-15 on Oct. 28 in University Park to fall to 13-8 on the season and 6-6 (T-6th) in the Big Ten Conference. The Nittany Lions are now 20-4 overall, 9-3 in conference play.
Erin Hartley led the Spartans with 12 kills, seven digs and three blocks. Jenny Rood added eight kills and seven digs, while Angela Morley had eight kills and three blocks. The Spartans hit just .117 to PSU's .347 and were outblocked 11-5.
MSU fell into a 0-3 hole to start the match but recovered to tie the game at three-all. With the score tied again at four and five, the Lions scored seven straight and cruised to a 15-7 win. The Spartans were outhit .357-.156. Hartley led the team with four kills.
The hole was deeper in game two as Penn State opened a 6-1 lead before a Nikki Colson service ace gave the Spartans their second point. Block assists by Angela Morley and Christie Landry saw MSU draw to within three, but the Lions scored seven-straight points and went on to a 15-5 win. MSU hit just .081 in the game to PSU's .457. Hartley added four more kills in the game.
The third game was no better as Michigan State began with a 0-5 deficit. Nikki Colson stepped in as starter for the game at setter, however, and gained valuable experience as the Spartans finally got on the board and fought to a 7-15 loss.
