Three Spartans Named Volleyball Preseason All-Big Ten

PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Michigan State has three representatives on the 2000 preseason All-Big Ten volleyball team. Seniors Christie Landry and Jessica Sanborn and junior Erin Hartley were all selected to the team. MSU and Penn State were the only teams to have three players named to the squad.
As a team, Michigan State was chosen to finish fourth behind Penn State, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Landry, a 6-2 setter from Naperville, Ill., was an All-Big Ten honorable mention in 1998 and was well on her way to another postseason award last year before injuring a knee in the second Big Ten contest of the season and missing the rest of the year. With 2,258 career assists, she is fourth on the all-time MSU list and one of only six Spartans in school history to amass 2,000 or more assists.
Sanborn, a 6-3 middle from Colbert, Wash., was named first-team All-Big Ten as well as All-District in 1999. She also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and was named second-team GTE Academic All-District. Sanborn ranks fourth all-time at MSU in hitting percentage (.281), third in blocks per game (1.17), sixth in total blocks (353) and ninth in block solos (62). She led the Spartans last season with a .322 hitting percentage.
Hartley, a 6-3 outside hitter from Midland, Mich., is a repeat selection to the All-Big Ten preseason team, having been voted onto the team in 1999. In 1999, she led the Spartans with 2.58 digs per game and was second with 3.81 kills pg. Hartley is currently fifth all-time at MSU with 3.49 kills and 8.97 attempts per game.
The Spartans were 21-13 overall, 10-10 in the Big Ten last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
MSU kicks off its 2000 campaign with the L&L/MSU Volleyball Classic on Sept. 1-2 against Eastern Washington, Rutgers and Northeastern in Jenison Field House.
