Volleyball Wins Sixth Annual L&L Classic

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State defeated Eastern Washington 15-5, 15-5, 15-10 on Saturday night to win the sixth annual L&L/MSU Volleyball Classic. It was the third time in tournament history the Spartans have been victorious. MSU is now 15-5 in L&L Classic matches.
Three Spartans highlighted the all-tournament team, including Jessica Sanborn, who hit 17 kills on a tournament-high .640 with eight blocks. Joining her was Christie Landry, who had 41 assists in the final match to go with three blocks, and Amy Sibbernsen, who finished out a rock-solid tournament with eight kills on .389 hitting to go with six digs and two blocks.
As a team the Spartans hit .374 and tallied nine team blocks. Robyn Sonju-Felder, also an all-tournament selection, led Eastern Washington with seven kills.
In its first match on Saturday, Michigan State drubbed Northeastern 15-2, 15-3, 15-7. Thirteen of MSU's 16 healthy players saw action. Sibbernsen led all hitters with 19 kills on .485 hitting and had a team-high nine digs. Classmate Jenny Rood earned her first collegiate start and tallied nine kills, four block and three digs, and freshman setter Nikki Colson racked up 18 assists and six digs while playing in just the third game.
In the opening match on Saturday, Rutgers defeated Eastern Washington 3-1 (15-6, 11-15, 15-13, 15-13). The Scarlet Knights set the L&L single match service aces record with 16. The old record of 15 had been set by Northeastern on Friday. Rutgers' Kera Carter had a tournament high 22 kills to go with seven digs and three assists while setters Pualani Tuyay and Ginger Schuster split time and assists, 22 each.
In the third match on Saturday, Rutgers felled Northeastern 16-14, 15-5, 15-3 to place second in the tournament with a 2-1 record. Carter banged out 16 kills on .556 hitting while Shayla Bush added 12 kills and nine digs.
