EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior Erin Hartley (Midland, Mich.) has added to her list of awards and accomplishments in a big way. Hartley was named today as a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten team, and also earned Co-Big Ten Player of the Week honors. In addition, Hartley received Michigan State's MVP award, the team's hitting efficiency award and the Top GPA award at the squad's annual banquet Sunday.
Junior middle Angela Morley (Holland, Mich.) and sophomore setter Nikki Colson (Lincoln, Neb.) both received All-Big Ten honorable mention recognition, while Kim Schram (London, Ont.) was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team.
This season, Hartley led MSU in kills (388) and hitting percentage (.335) while ranking second in digs (218), total blocks (104), service aces (32) and assists (62). Earlier this season she became the seventh player in MSU history to total 1,000 career kills and digs, and has now recorded 1,484 career kills, ranking her fifth all-time at MSU and tied for 31st in Big Ten history. She also ranks in seventh place on MSU's career block assists (313) list, eighth in total blocks (379) and ninth in digs (1,081) and service aces (120).
Hartley received Co-Big Ten Player of the Week honors with Ohio State's Anne Botica on the strength of her back-to-back 20-kill matches as the Spartans downed No. 21 Illinois and Indiana to move into a tie for fourth place with the Illini in the final Big Ten standings. Hartley connected on 20 kills and posted nine digs against Illinois, then followed that with 21 kills and eight digs in the win over Indiana. For the week, Hartley hit at a .411 clip, averaging 5.86 kills, 2.43 digs, 1.14 blocks and 0.9 assists per game.
This is the third Big Ten Player of the Week award for Hartley, an education major with a 3.58 grade point average. She was also tabbed earlier this season on Sept. 10, as well as October 17, 1999.
Morley, who was named the Division I National Player of the Week Nov. 26, led MSU and ranked second in the Big Ten with 150 total blocks this season. Morley, who is on pace to break the Michigan State record for career blocks, led the Big Ten this season averaging 1.68 blocks per game in conference matches. She also slammed 220 kills while hitting .303 this season, and tied school records for blocks in a three-game match by recording 10 block assists and 11 total blocks last Friday against Illinois.
Colson ranks third in the Big Ten averaging 13.10 assists per game, which is the fifth best rate in school history. Through matches played Nov. 18, she ranked 21st nationally when her average was 12.86 assists per game. Colson, who ranks third on the team with 214 digs, has had six double-doubles and was named to the All-Tournament teams in both of MSU's tournaments this year. She also received the Andrea DeLuca Spirit Award at the team's banquet Sunday.
Schram ranks second on the team with 247 kills in conference matches, and her 3.53 kills per game in league matches ranks 10th in the Big Ten. Her 266 kills in all matches is the sixth best freshman total in MSU history, and her overall rate of 3.50 kills per game ranks third best among Spartan freshmen.
Also honored at Sunday's banquet was senior Lisa Ashton (Watervliet, Mich.), who received the Captain's Award.
