EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior Erin Hartley (Midland, Mich.) added to her list of honors today, being named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Mideast Region team. Hartley was one of 12 players named to the team, which is comprised of players from the 44 schools in the Big Ten, Mid-American Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and Northeast Conference. Hartley is now eligible for the AVCA All-America team, which will be announced Dec. 12.
Already this season, Hartley was a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten first team, twice earned Co-Big Ten Player of the Week honors, was named to the Academic All-District third team and received Michigan State's MVP award, the team's hitting efficiency award and the squad's Top GPA award.
This season, Hartley led MSU in kills (412) and hitting percentage (.337) while ranking second in digs (236), total blocks (113), service aces (34) and assists (67). Earlier this season she became the seventh player in MSU history to total 1,000 career kills and digs, and finished her career with 1,508 career kills, ranking her fifth all-time at MSU. She also ranks in seventh place on MSU's career block assists list (321), eighth in total blocks (388), ninth in digs (1,099) and tenth in service aces (122).
Hartley becomes the fifth Michigan State player to receive first team All-Region honors, joining Dana Cooke (1995), Val Sterk (1995 and 1996), Jenna Wrobel (1997 and 1998) and Jessica Sanborn (1999).
Hartley, an education major with a 3.58 grade point average, led Michigan State to a 21-8 record this year, including a 13-7 Big Ten slate which tied the Spartans for fourth place. MSU, which is ranked 19th in the latest USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll, advanced to the second round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament, defeating No. 25 Notre Dame in the opening round before falling to No. 6 Wisconsin in round two.
