Diana Steplyk:
"We are what we repeatedly do. Therefore excellence is not an act, but a habit."
- Aristotle
"The sun has not yet even begun to peek over the horizon as Diana Steplyk is driving to volleyball practice at 5 a.m. Her day is just beginning as she prepares for three hours of practice, one hour of lifting, four hours of class, grab a quick dinner and then off to the Clara Bell Smith Center to be tutored for two hours. This is the life of a Division I student athlete. The only difference is that Steplyk is a woman and without the help of Title IX, she wouldn't even be here."
My friend and fellow student-athlete Kelly Theiser on the women's golf team wrote this article for her journalism class and interviewed me on my thoughts and feelings about Title IX. I had never really taken the time to realize the impact Title IX has made on my life, until Kelly did this interview. To think I wouldn't even have this opportunity if Title IX didn't exist is a pretty scary thought.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported women's athletics, Title IX, and especially supported the young girls of future generations. Thank you for helping to make sure they have this special opportunity that I've had to play competitive Division I volleyball and be a part of such an elite program and an esteemed academic institution. We are lucky to have such enthusiastic support and loyalty, which helps us play to our best abilities and strive for personal success.
Michelle Kopka:
"Your actions speak so loudly that I cannot hear what you say."
"I'm a great believer in luck. I find the harder I work, the more luck I have."
