Volleyball Suffers Four-Game Loss At Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Kim Schram had 16 kills and 10 digs to go along with one service ace as Michigan State volleyball (6-7, 1-4 Big Ten) fell at Michigan (14-2, 4-1 Big Ten), 3-1. Game scores in the match were 19-30, 30-24, 29-31, 12-30. The win gives the Wolverines the first half point in the fall race for the Pontiac Challenge Cup.
Jessica Hohl and Michelle Kopka had 11 kills apiece in the match, while freshman setter Maggie Griffin posted 38 assists and nine digs. Miken Trogdon had four service aces for the Spartans. State struggled with its hitting, posting just a .101 attack percentage. Freshman Tracy Bellwood took over the libero role starting in the second game, and posted a career-best 18 digs on the night.
The first game saw Michigan pull out to a steady lead, though the Spartans kept the game close throughout the first third, trailing just 10-8 until the Wolverines strung together five consecutive points (15-8). From there, UM took the game, 30-19. Schram and Hohl each posted four kills in the game, while Griffin added eight assists and four digs. Schram's four kills came on .300 hitting. The Spartans had an attack percentage of just .029 (10K-9E-34TA) in the game to UM's .147 (14K-9E-34TA).
State kept the second game close throughout, as the game was tied at 11, 12, 13, 14, 16 and 19 before State took a 21-19 lead on two consecutive service aces from Miken Trogdon and an attack error by the Wolverines. MSU won the game, 30-24. Michelle Kopka had five kills in the game on 1.000 hitting (6K-0E-6TA), whle Tracy Bellwood took over libero duties and had nine digs in the game. Meghan Schoen continued to lead MSU's blocking efforts, with three through the second game. State had four service aces in the match through the intermission, and all four came in the second game. The Spartans hit .294 in the second game, while holding UM to an attack percentage of .103.
State led the third game by as many as four points early (10-6) though UM fought back and kept the game within two points. The teams had 13 ties and four lead changes in the game before Michigan took the 2-1 lead with a 31-29 win. Hohl had five kills for MSU in the game, while Schram added four. Griffin had 12 kills in the game, while Trogdon added another service ace. State out-hit Michigan, despite the loss, .140-.130.
The Wolverines jumped ahead in the fourth game and did not look back, as they ran off an early eight-point service run from libero Sarah Allen to take an 18-5 lead. UM took the match with a 30-12 fourth-game victory. Schram had four kills for the Spartans, and Griffin added seven assists. Kopka had four kills in the final game. State hit -.053 (10K-12E-38TA) to Michigan's .500 (13K-1E-24TA).
Michigan State travels to No. 24 Illinois for an 8 p.m. (EDT) match Saturday, Oct. 9.
